In this chapter of ‘the filmmaker’s guide’ we’re actually going to be learning about literature and film together. I understand that many of you are sitting in university during difficult times and finding it increasingly hard to study and I understand that many of you who are not at university or not planning on it are possibly stuck of what to do, need a break or even need to catch up on learning film before you get to the next level. This guide will be brief but will also contain: new vocabulary, concepts and theories, films to watch and we will be exploring something taboo until now in the ‘filmmaker’s guide’ - academia (abyss opens). Each article will explore a different concept of film, philosophy, literature or bibliography/filmography etc. in order to give you something new to learn each time we see each other. You can use some of the words amongst family and friends to sound clever or you can get back to me (email in bio) and tell me how you’re doing. So, strap in and prepare for the filmmaker’s guide to film studies because it is going to be one wild ride.

Brad Pitt

Who is he?

Brad Pitt is possibly best known for women being attracted to him, but his acting talent is very much underrated because of this. The range of different characters he has portrayed over his career is immense and continues to grow as he branches out into other parts of filmmaking such as directorship, production and many more.

What did he do?

Brad Pitt has done so much for filmmaking and for the modern film that we often overlook his achievements in favour of his looks. But, in reality, Brad Pitt has created an empire of many different faces and characters and some of his characters have often been regarded as some of the better of 1980s and 1990s cinema. Let us take a look at his greatest achievements on the screen as one of the most versatile actors of the last thirty years.

Greatest Works

Kalifornia (1993)

When I first saw this movie, I was absolutely terrified of Brad Pitt. He was not the kind-hearted almost Ken-doll like man that I had perceived him to be but instead he was a monster, he was disgusting not in looks but in behaviours. He was a terrible human being and that made him instantly seem unattractive and unartistic despite his appearance. The fact that he looks like this and is still able to revolt you must say something about his amount of talent being quite immense.

12 Monkeys (1995)

This is one of my favourite films starring Brad Pitt in which he portrays an animal right's activist that is locked up in an institution where he meets Bruce Willis who has come back from the future to put things straight. Thinking that it is Jeffrey that he has to fix, he attempts to get inside Jeffrey's already frazzled mind. But Brad Pitt who portrays Jeffrey is a lot smarter than anything in that Bruce Willis had in mind. It won him a Golden Globe and is one of his most beloved performances to date. An amazing piece of art, Brad Pitt put so much into this role and he got so much out of it too.

The Assassination of Jesse James (2007)

I think that this must be one of the most beautiful films of the 21st century and it stars Brad Pitt as Jesse James, the outlaw - with Casey Affleck portraying his murderer, Robert Ford. It is a brilliant film with a narrator, with these scenes in which we are complete on-lookers rather than involved in the story and it is just the perfect role for Brad Pitt to play. He does not make a likeable figure out of Jesse James, but rather a paranoid one who is constantly looking behind him. You almost feel sorry for him that he had chosen this way of life early on.

Other great works starring Brad Pitt:

  • Cool World (1992)
  • True Romance (1993)
  • Interview with the Vampire (1994)
  • Fight Club (1999)
  • Snatch (2000)
  • Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Conclusion

I think we can all agree that Brad Pitt is one of the greatest movie actors of the last thirty years. He has so many films under his belt, so many different characters that he has portrayed and I would personally love it if people looked deeper into him instead of focusing on his appearance. He is a pretty brilliant actor.
