Tyler Perry is the writer, director, and executive producer of more than 40 movies. In the past, Perry's deals have been with Oprah Winfrey's OWN and Viacom. However, his very first movie was just released on Netflix on Friday, January 17, 2020. The 120-minute movie was filmed in only five days in December before Christmas at Perry's new 330-acre Atlanta filming complex.

The entertainment mogul bragged about how quickly he filmed the movie. He said it takes people in Hollywood seven days to shoot just one episode of a primetime drama, but he filmed his entire movie in less time than that. He said he gets his movies completed quicker because he does everything single-handedly without having to wait for a decision from other officials.

About the Movie

A Fall From Grace is a thriller unlike many of Perry's other movies. There are twists and turns in it that will keep viewers wondering until the very end. While Perry writes some comedies, there is nothing to laugh about in his latest creation. In fact, viewers might feel some sadness and want to cry when they see some scenes involving the main characters.

Main Cast

Grace Waters is the leading character, played by Crystal Fox. She is also a leading character in Tyler Perry's soap opera The Haves and the Have Nots that airs on OWN. Grace's friend Sarah is played by Phylicia Rashad. Bresha Webb plays Jasmine Bryant, a 26-year-old attorney who struggles to win her first case or lose her job. She is 35 in real life but is being portrayed as young, naive, inexperience, and incapable of winning the tough case she has been given.

Plot Without Spoilers

Grace Waters is divorced and lonely. Her closest friend Sarah encourages her to find love again. When Grace finds and marries a handsome man who is 17 years her junior named Shannon Delong, played by Mehcad Brooks, her life changes in ways she never expected. Veteran actress Cicely Tyson is in the film as well as Tyler Perry who has a role in his own movie.

No matter how many movies viewers have seen, it will be difficult for them to predict the ending of this movie. The twist at the end is so unbelievable that avid Netflix viewers won't suspect the ending until they see it unfold before their very eyes. No matter how hard they try to figure things out, they won't be able to do so. That's why A Fall From Grace is known as a thriller.

What Critics Are Saying

Critics have noted how Perry portrays Black women in his films. They say he makes movies by selling out women of his own race. They say in A Fall From Grace, he doesn't give any comic relief for the main women characters because they play such dark parts.

The film does include some issues that cannot be overlooked. For example, there is a young rookie public Black female attorney trying to keep her job by winning her first case which is a very difficult one. There is elder abuse of lonely Black women who are desperate to be loved.

Some critics say Perry depicts women in his films as passive and gullible. Perry claims that this is the type of movie his audiences love because they are the stories that could be true to them. He posted on Instagram and Twitter that he doesn't have a writer's room. His fans say he should have one in order to get someone else's perspective instead of relying only on his own way of seeing things.

Perry said he doesn't need 10-12 people to give him suggestions about his writing. He concludes, "Nobody writes any of my work. I write it all."

Watch A Fall From Grace on Netflix to see if the critics are right about Tyler Perry's characterization of Black women. Also, see if you can predict the ending before you actually see it.
