Do you absolutely love the concept of a musical tv series? Did you enjoy the idea of Glee but got tired of the problematic storylines and lack of growth of the characters? Or perhaps you have outgrown the area of teenage and high school dramas which tend to be the musicalized ones?

Well those are my feelings exactly.

That's why I present to you three great musical tv series that will take you in wildly different directions which you can enjoy depending on where your tastes lie.

1. Blackpool (2004)

While Glee was one of the first massive success stories of musical tv series, there had been several attempts at this before. One of these attempts was the BBC's Blackpool. Despite receiving a couple of award nominations, it is not generally well-known but let me tell you, nothing prepares you for the wild ride that is Blackpool.

Blackpool stars David Morrissey and David Tennant as they navigate through a chase of cat and mouse when there is a murder investigation shortly after the opening of a local arcade. Suddenly you have Morrissey as the arcade owner challenging Tennant as the D.I. as they sing "These Boots Were Made for Walking" to each other or trying to drown each other in a pool to the lyrics of "Should I Stay or Should I Go".

This is a full-fledged crime drama with incredibly comedic bits to the tune of already-existing songs.

2. Galavant (2015-2016)

Heading off in a different direction and onwards to adventure we will

~attend the tale of GAAA-LAAA-VAAAANT!~

Galavant is a medieval comedy adventure initially following the disgraced return to glory of the brave knight Galavant and his quest to 'help' Princess Isabella rescue her parents and bring down King Richard. The adventures and the world become increasingly complex, much like Game of Thrones in their quest for the final battle for the throne of Westeros but funnier and with more clothes.

A wonderfully talented and hilarious cast that has so much to offer while poking fun at the stereotypical knight and princess stories that we are so used to. The series is also full of references to other bits of pop-culture of its time and expresses in song their own surprise at getting a second season.

The songs in the series are completely original and totally catchy to sing along with.

3. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019)

The absolute queen of tv musical comedies is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend starring Rachel Bloom. The story follows an uptight New York lawyer on the verge of a nervous breakdown who decides to chase after her summer camp boyfriend all the way in West Covina, California, dropping everything and drastically changing her way of life.

Crazy Ex-Grilfriend has an interesting twist musically. While the songs are original creations for the show, you can easily trace many of them back to their inspiration from pop music and other musicals, emulated through the melody and references to music videos or certain artists.

The show is a romantic comedy through and through, having the protagonist Rebecca go through love struggles but managing to grow as the story progresses, changing her values and concerning herself with other matters while also becoming a better friend.

Now, with three new shows to watch and plenty of songs to learn, I'm sure you're more than ready to take a full dive into the world of musical tv and, if you run out, you can always start checking out the musical episodes within regular series that are now becoming a staple and often fan-favorites.

Do you know of any other great musical shows we should check out? What did you think of these?
