Wii U Officially Shut Down After Switch Announcement, But There Were Some Great Games

Ever since Nintendo of America has announced the Nintendo Switch, there'd been a lot of worry that both the Wii U and the New Nintendo 3DS would no longer be supported. And, now, Nintendo has announced that the Wii U is officially out of production as of

Additionally, Nintendo has also announced that as of this Friday (Nov. 4th) that the Wii U will be ending production after its trouble-filled lifespan. During the life of the Wii U, Nintendo witnessed slowing sales, dramatically lower users, and even fewer releases than on the Wii. However, the Wii U wasn't always as troubled as it seems as it saw bolstering sales with the releases of Super Smash Bros., Pokken Tournament, Mario Kart 8, and even The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker HD.

But not all was bad with the Wii U as a console. It had some wonderful games on it and even an astonishing set of virtual console games to enjoy from the last 20+ years. So let's take a look at the best of the best on the Wii U.

The Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD

The Legend of Zelda is a series that has been capturing the heart of fans for well over 20 years now. Having just celebrated its 30th birthday, is a series that remains strong, and remains nostalgic as ever for both fans new and old. The Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD was no different. It brought forth another unique story as Link took to the series on a ship while exploring an open world around him.

While it was an HD remake, if there was any selling point to the Wii U within the first few years of its launch, it was definitely the gorgeous Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD.

Hyrule Warriors

If there's any smash-up that fans could have wanted to see, it was definitely The Legend of Zelda and the famed Omega Force brand of "Warriors." Hyrule Warriors didn't just pride itself upon being a spin-off of the famed Nintendo franchise. Instead also prided itself upon being a unique take of Hyrule and how a Dynasty Warriors title could work out together, and it worked well.

However, due to the faltering sales of the Wii U itself, it probably wasn't the best place to launch the game, but for fans it seemed to work out rather nicely. Later on, Nintendo 3DS fans were even treated to another version of this game, but it didn't look nearly as nice as its Wii U twin.

Splatoon

If there's any game out there that screamed outrageous fun and gimmick, it's Splatoon. Splatoon is Nintendo's first attempt at having a team-based "shooter" on their home console. The game worked out great for those wanting to slap ink all over the place while playing humanoid squid kids. The game offered up a nice arrangement of maps, modes, fun to be had, and a bonus for amiibo fans to enjoy.

If we are lucky, hopefully we'll see a new installment on the Nintendo Switch to keep this awesome title alive.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

It's not uncommon to see Nintendo launch an awesome JRPG game. Xenoblade Chronicles X is not one that is exempt from this approach. Instead the game sticks out among the rest as it's truly one of the only games to launch on the Wii U as a full blown open-world game where players can search, quest, and hunt for treasures to their hearts content.

With the success of Xenoblade Chronicles, it wasn't hard to see why this game would make an amazing exception for a Wii U title.

Tokyo Mirage Session's FE

If you're a fan of Shin Megami Tensei's Persona and Fire Emblem this game is definitely one that fans shouldn't pass down given the chance. Besides providing a gigantic story-driven RPG, the game also boasts some of the most beautiful songs, and one of the interesting campaigns to ever hit Nintendo consoles in this Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei mash-up.

Now if only we could see a sequel land on the Nintendo Switch or New Nintendo 3DS.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

As one of the most recognized franchises in gaming, there's no doubt that Super Smash Bros.Wii U is an amazing title. Today the game still carries on the same antics with new characters from some old franchises and some new such as Lucina, Ike, Robin, Dark Pit, Cloud Strife, and Bayonetta. While there are others, the game carries on traditions we all know quite well.

With added amiibo support, the competitive edge got even bigger as fans could train up their amiibo's, and pit them against one another. Now if only we could have seen new characters brought forth into amiibo's such as Corrin and Cloud.

ZombiU

While the game itself didn't do so hot when it launched, ZombiU took what Resident Evil did as a franchise, and tried to improve upon it. However, the game did the horror element right by allowing players to micromanage their inventory, and get straight back into the action once having done so.

Bayonetta 1 & 2 Combo Pack

If you bought Bayonetta 2 on Wii U, you were treated to a nice little surprise with a second disc that contained Bayonetta, which just happened to be a rather enjoyable game. For fans of franchises like Devil May Cry and Onimusha this game was right up your alley.

Unfortunately, the game didn't see a launch outside of the Wii U, but we can only hope the game franchise will get a second chance on the Nintendo Shift next year.
