Tired of Waiting for 'Kingdom Hearts III'? Here's 6 JRPGs You Absolutely Have to Play

When it comes to RPGs, there's no shortage to enjoy thanks to the massive catalogue stretching back 25–30 years. Whether it's a Final Fantasy title, a Shin Megami Tensei game, or even a game such as Xenoblade Chronicles, there's a lot out there to grab, especially if you're looking to burn time 'til the releases of #KingdomHearts3 and the #FinalFantasyVIIRemake.

With new #RPGs continuing to release, there's too many for us to list here. But if you want six good ones that are backward compatible? We got you covered.

1. Lost Odyssey (2007)

Developed exclusively for the Xbox 360 (now backward compatible with Xbox One), #LostOdyssey is seen as video game designer Hironobu Sakaguchi's spiritual successor to #FinalFantasy along with its predecessor Blue Dragon, which launched a year before. This game is a turn-based RPG and if Final Fantasy is up your alley, you'll thoroughly enjoy this game and its play style.

Lost Odyssey takes place after a meteor has destroyed much of the nations of Uhra and Khent. Our main protagonist Kaim joins forces with the characters Seth and Jansen to investigate the Grand Staff. They are captured by hostile scouts and are taken to the enemy capitol of Numara, where they meet the immortal Queen Ming. Sounds awesome, right?

2. Persona 4 Golden (2012)

If you aren't familiar with the #ShinMegamiTensei franchise, you're completely missing out on one of the longest running franchises that competes with Final Fantasy for the hearts of JRPG fans in the know. With Persona 5 just around the corner, the game is one that will test your patience, attention to detail, and your ability to create bonds in order to further your capabilities in game as you head toward the best ending possible.

#Persona4Golden is a remake of the #PlayStation2 title of the same name, but without the "Golden." This PlayStation Vita/TV exclusive title puts players in the role of Yu, who helps his friends investigate odd murders that have been occurring in their small town.

The game takes place in third person, with players exploring dungeons, building relationships, and controlling supernatural beings in order to take out their enemies and save their friends.

3. Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Hailed as one of the great RPGs of all time, Square Enix's #FinalFantasyVII is a game that sets the bar high for what it takes to be a great RPG. If you haven't played it, you surely know about it. The trials and tribulations of Cloud Strife and his unruly group of friends as they try to save "Gaia" from its ultimate destruction is immersive to say the least.

Players will go on one of the wildest adventures ever, with ruby and emerald weapons, charming music, and a steampunk meets cyberpunk aesthetic. If you're all for summoning dragons and a story of betrayal, this is the game for you.

4. The Legend Of Dragoon (1999)

Like the idea of your character being a meta-human who can grow wings and gain special powers? That's exactly what The Legend of Dragoon has to offer outside of its amazing story and gameplay. Players can take over the character Dart, who is headed home from a five-year journey, to hunt a creature that killed his family.

On his way home he is attacked by Feyrbrand, a mantis-like dragon that is controlled by Sandora, a faction hellbent on rebellion during the Serdian Civil War. Dart's ability to turn into a Dragoon is unearthed after he encounters a mysterious woman named Rose.

5. Xenoblade Chronicles (2010)

There really is nothing like this amazing concept of two giant warring gods locked in a timeless battle, within the corpses of which civilizations have made their homes. #XenobladeChronicles offers a unique experience as players adventure across the god bodies of Bionis and Mechonis.

One god hosts humanoids while the other hosts mostly humanoid-like mechina. This is your journey you'll be undertaking as protagonist Shulk. #Nintendo has offered up this game on both the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS platforms.

6. The Last Story (2011)

This niche title was reintroduced to #Wii and Wii U users thanks to backward compatibility. The game is one that was meant to be seen in HD, one that would have worked well with a remastering for both the PlayStation 4 or #XboxOne consoles (#NintendoSwitch anyone?).

If you're up for a fantasy version of #GearsofWar, The Last Story may be just the game for you. After enduring mixed reviews for his games Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, Hironobu Sakaguchi went out of his way to create a title that would appeal to the JRPG masses. In the game you'll take on the role of Dagran, a leader of a mercenary band who are making their way to Lazulis to find work. On this wild adventure you help a woman evade capture as you obtain and wield magical powers.
