To make it simpler for you to play your PS5 games, Sony has officially revealed that it is developing a PlayStation portable. Its name is Project Q, and it was revealed during the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday.

Jim Ryan, CEO of PlayStation, stated during the PlayStation Showcase that the company would introduce a specialised gadget that would allow users to stream any game from their PS5 system utilising Remote Play over Wi-Fi. It contains an 8-inch HD screen and all of the controls and functionality of the DualSense wireless controller, and is internally referred to as "Project Q."

According to a Sony press release, it will specifically have an LCD screen running games at up to 1080p and 60fps over Wi-Fi and will contain both the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense. Similar to the PlayStation Bluetooth earbuds unveiled on Wednesday, the Q portable is scheduled to go on sale later this year. Sony did not specify a specific release date or estimated price for the new product, though.

The Q is apparently intended as a companion for your own PlayStation 5, rather than something that would play games natively like a Steam Deck, phone, or even stream them from the cloud. This is indicated by the fine print at the bottom of Sony's presentation.

However, Sony is one of the top firms with a cloud gaming service, and based on the numerous job posts we saw, it appears that Sony is now redesigning this service. As a result, it's probable that the Q may eventually have cloud gaming. It would be strange to leave out services that bring Sony additional revenue.

Whether you'd be able to utilise the Q to stream games outside of your home was not mentioned in Sony's quick tease: Sony's Remote Play does currently enable cellular connections, but because Sony has only specified Wi-Fi, you might need to tether it to a phone or hotspot.

A report from Insider Gaming helped spread rumours about the portable earlier this year. The 8-inch LCD screen, the similarity to DualSense, the highest quality and frame rate, as well as the fact that it relies on Remote Play and isn't a cloud gaming device, were all accurately described in that report. The portable was reportedly given the codename Q Lite, which is similar to Project Q, according to the article.

Project Q seems to be Sony's response to the rising demand for mobile devices. The Nintendo Switch has undoubtedly been a big success, but there are now a number of options to play more modern games on more cutting-edge hardware than the Switch, like Valve's Steam Deck and Asus' ROG Ally. If you're looking for a Sony-made way to play the most recent PlayStation games on a handheld, you might want to save aside some money for Project Q, even though it has its own peculiarity in that it can only stream games via Wi-Fi.

You don't have to wait for Sony's handheld to try Remote Play to stream games from your PS5. It can be done with almost any iPhone, Android phone, Windows or Mac computer, and you can even run the Chiaki Linux app onto the Steam Deck.
