The Most Underrated Horror Games Have the Best Stories
Why is this such an odd stereotype in the gaming world?

I have been noticing a crazy thing within the gaming world when it comes to the horror genre. The best horror games tend to be the most underrated games, that have some of the best stories I have seen in horror. It’s a shame that not everyone knows about these amazing games.
Sure, everyone knows about Silent Hill, that is still underrated, but still more well known than most horror games, and of course, Resident Evil, that is beloved by everyone.
I recently found out about a particular game that I purchased for only $6 instead of $60, and I was blown away by how imaginative this story was.
I had found out about the game by accident, and I couldn’t believe that it doesn’t have a bigger fanbase.
Here are several horror games that deserve a MASSIVE fanbase:
Cry of Fear
This game is literally free on Steam, for anyone who is interested in playing this game. We follow the story of a young man who suddenly gets hit by a car when he attempts to help an injured man, and he awakens in a different part of the city, but something is very wrong.
He is now stuck fighting monsters, as he tries to navigate his way back to safety, not realizing that this world he is trapped in may not be real.
It’s a fantastic premise that carries very heavy themes, and while it may not be for everyone, I will say that the story is 100% top tier.
2. The Sinking City
I can’t believe I found this game by accident. I had been having a massive phase of H.P. Lovecraft, and I found out there was a horror game based on the stories of Lovecraft’s work. This story follows a man named Charles Reed, a detective who is investigating a town that is surrounded heavily by water, where the rain never appears to stop.
People are also transforming into fish monsters, and appear to worship a god known as Kay, a mystery that haunts the town. Charles comes to the town to figure out why he is experiencing disturbing visions like everyone else, that makes you go mad over time. People are now killing each other for literally no reason, and it’s up to Charles to find out what sort of evil is taking place within this town.
I’m currently playing this game, the story is so addicting, I can’t stop solving so many cases for people in the town, and I’m so curious to find out the real truth behind this evil!
3. The Evil Within Franchise
While people did play these games upon release, I feel that it still feels so underrated compared to many other horror games. We follow the story of a detective who is stuck in a complete nightmare, along with his colleagues, that turns into both a rescue mission and trying to survive as he battles monsters and powerful entities with supernatural abilities.
The first game felt like a chore to play through, how I beat the game on nightmare mode left my mind reeling with anger and frustration, and it felt bittersweet when I learned I had been killed a total of 256 times in this game.
The sequel was my favorite one, not because it was easier to play compared to the first one, but the story really did not hold back this time around. The detective returns back to the nightmare world to save his daughter, the only family that he has left. He willingly enters the world with somewhat of a plan, and he battles multiple new enemies, that all lead to an amazing twist for who is behind everything this time around.
It’s a shame that we most likely won’t ever get a third game. Just one more game to this franchise would have been the perfect trilogy!
What other horror games do you think deserve a huge audience?
