The last couple of years have taken a major toll on everyone, encouraging us all to dive beneath a plush blanket with an assortment of creature comforts. You’re in good company if indulging in a relaxing game chocked full of lovable characters tops your list of spirit-soothing supplies.

Luckily, our collective pleas have reached capable game devs who share this sentiment and are passionately crafting new escapes. Nintendo Switch took notice and is adding whimsy to its upcoming list of exclusives with a charming title ready to scratch this itch.

September’s Nintendo Direct event revealed the nestle-worthy Fae Farm, an enchanting mash-up of several beloved farming sims. This cozy and colorful game is reminiscent of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but with an added emphasis on magic.

A thriving homestead filled with an assortment of vibrant crops

Phoenix Labs, creator of Dauntless, is seizing on the popularity of the farm simulation genre and infusing it with fantasy RPG elements inspired by games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The result is a unique game combining casual play with bursts of storytelling and tactical action on the mystical island of Azoria.

One of the most enticing features of Fae Farm is the ability to play locally or online with up to 4 players. You can also choose to explore the world solo if you’re eager to roll out on your own, though it may take a little longer to accomplish tasks without cooperative teammates lending a hand.

As expected, your fully customizable character will manage a growing homestead featuring a quaint house ready to be embellished with the decorations of your choice. Outside, tidy crops prosper with the right attention and a wee bit of magic. Other activities include gathering resources, crafting items, and catching fish.

Social interaction with NPCs is important too, of course. Chat with friendly villagers in the bustling town square and embark on their quests. You’ll get to explore all of Azoria, but your adventures will soar beyond the island's natural landscapes. Be prepared to journey into magical fae realms where you’ll engage in battles and uncover secrets.

Fae magic plays a significant role in this game, with spells that affect your abilities and surroundings. Your mission is to harness this power over the changing seasons to restore balance and harmony to the island’s community. You'll even be able to adorn your own delightful pair of fae wings alongside the usual robust collection of swappable ensembles.

"[Creative Director] Katie De Sousa's vision for Fae Farm has excited us for a long time, and you can feel the passion she and the team have poured into the game from day one," Jesse Houston, the CEO and Co-founder of Phoenix Labs remarked. "From the artwork and the game design, to the handcrafted world and seamless online play, Fae Farm exemplifies our desire to create timeless games that will be shared for generations."

A frigid landscape to explore within the fae snow realm

"With Fae Farm we wanted to take our favorite elements of the sim genres we love, infuse them with magic and beautiful art, and wrap everything in a light-hearted cooperative experience," commented De Sousa. "I can't wait to see what kind of cozy homesteads players build in Azoria."

Steve Singer, Senior Vice President of Publisher & Developer Relations at Nintendo of America added his excitement for Fae Farm’s upcoming release, expressing admiration for the impressive work produced at Phoenix Labs.

There’s no solid release date yet, but Nintendo expects Fae Farm to drop in late spring 2023. Bookmark the official Nintendo store page or follow Fae Farm’s Twitter for updates. In the meantime, sate your cravings for coziness with other promising farming sims debuting soon. Top picks include Hokko Life and Coral Island.
