Savior of Light is an RPG game created by Oakenai Six. It began as a Kickstarter project which became successfully supported, therefore pushing off its further development. The developer has stated that more content will be available on Steam in the future. At the moment, you can download the game for free through the Steam website and store.

After quickly delving into the game myself, I immediately became entranced by the music featured throughout the gameplay. The mechanics are simple and easy to use. You also begin the game with a short tutorial that briefly explains the controls. By the way, this game is controller-supported.

Savior of Light's style seems to be closely influenced by earlier released RPGs such as Final Fantasy VI, Legend of Zelda II, and Secret of Mana. All much-loved games that had been well ahead of their time! The creator adopted many features of these retro games and implemented them into Savior of Light.

The combat system is turn-based, and there will be events at which you will meet new allies and party members that will accompany you on your journeys. Once again, I must mention that the in-game music is almost ethereal and worth all the praise!

The Protagonist

The player's character is a beautiful young woman named Hikari Megami. As soon as the story begins, Hikari finds herself curiously stumbling into a strange world through a portal that shows up in her home. Upon her landing, she discovers that she now dawns a pair of cat ears and strange garments. After navigating through the backwoods, you will have to enter a church, thus beginning Hikari's long journey.

The Plot

She then meets Rennu Mamoru, an orphaned man that inherited the responsibility of maintaining the temple after his late father. He claims that she is a magic user and takes her out back to battle some monsters. Although he proves that she carries magical capabilities, the question arises as to how? How exactly did she happen upon this strange dimension?

Rennu explains that the world they are in is called Enolu, era 807. He says that his people are considered protection demons, The Guardians. That explains the long ears and wings! He also mentions that because of the past, his people and their powers are considered bad omens. The temple they are standing in is called Luneste, which resides near a village, Hita.

Rennu recalls his adoptive father, Itae, warning him that the savior of Enolu would be a white mage that comes and vanquishes Seer for good. Hikari doesn't take the news too well and gets anxious. She is afraid she has no idea where to begin and to make matters worse, she doesn't quite know too much about her powers and how to use them. Plus, she is a cat!

Rennu joins your party, and from then on, you head to the north to the village of Hita. Then you will find a merchant, collect a few items for your journey, and be on your merry way.

Noticeable Features

  • Within the game, you will meet teammates that can use some of their abilities outside of battle. Rennu, for example, can heal you and other members as well.
  • Another cool feature of the game is as you explore, your character will observe the objects in the area when you press the action button nearby them.
  • Whenever you need to redeem yourself after a battle, you can use a statue of Enolu which will revitalize your whole team, and the statue of Kona does a similar effect by boosting your attack.

Combat Mechanics

The combat mechanics of the game are simple and easy to use. It is turn-based, so you can scroll through the various options and take your time deciding what your next move will be. You have your attack mode, guard, magic, and items. Attack mode is pretty basic, you select the enemy you'd like to hit, and then you will proceed to the next teammate. Guard is also self-explanatory; your character will guard themselves, thus easing the damage they receive until their next playable turn. Magic or abilities will show what each user can do, such as attack or support spells. Lastly, you have items, which will show you all usable items in your inventory. To note, you can escape the battle or back out of any menu by using the ESC button!

After a victorious win, you will earn experience points that go towards your team's level-up progress and receive munnies, the game's currency. Another thing to remember is to save your game as frequently as you need; I do so after every battle as the battles can be randomized.

Menu screen!

Menu and Inventory

You can get to the menu and inventory at any time while you're exploring with the ESC key. Once you are on the menu, it will give you options for Items, Skills, Equip, Status, Formation, Options, and Save.

In the item menu, you can use any items that you obtain here. Upon opening the skills menu, you can look at or use some abilities from your party members. Inside the equipment tab, you'll be able to change into new armor and weapons that you've obtained or purchased! With status, you'll be able to see what your character is wearing, their level stats, and their skillsets. The formation tab can change what character you control while walking about and what order the team follows behind. The last two tabs are options and save, make sure to look at these in the beginning and decide what controls and settings you feel are suitable for you! There is also a choice to end your game at the bottom of the menu screen.
