New Star GP Is an Arcade Racing Game Like Some Old ’90s Classics

In some of my previous posts, I’ve talked about different racing games. You can find the links to those at the end of this article. But today, I want to dive into the awesome world of old-school arcade racing games and also tell you about this cool new game called New Star GP.

Classic arcade racing games from the ‘90s

Ah, the ‘90s! It was a time when racing games were all the rage, and boy, did they bring the excitement! Let’s buckle up and take a trip down memory lane, exploring some iconic titles from that era.

First up, we have “Daytona USA” by Sega. This game hit the arcades like a speed demon in 1993, and it was an absolute blast to play. Picture this: you slide into the seat of a realistic-looking stock car, gripping the steering wheel with sweaty palms as the engine roars to life.

The adrenaline rushes through your veins as you tackle Daytona’s iconic oval track, dodging opponents and gunning for the checkered flag. The graphics were mind-blowing at the time, with vibrant colors and smooth gameplay that made you feel like you were really behind the wheel.

Next on the list is “Sega Rally Championship,” released in 1995. This game took the racing scene by storm with its unique off-road racing experience. It offered a variety of rally cars to choose from and took you on thrilling courses filled with mud, gravel, and unpredictable terrain.

The handling was realistic, and the physics made you feel every bump and slide. The standout feature of this game was its revolutionary dynamic weather system, where rain would turn the tracks into slippery slopes, adding an extra layer of challenge. It was all about mastering the art of powerslides and finding the perfect racing line to secure victory.

Now, let’s shift gears and talk about the game that redefined the genre: “Gran Turismo.” This legendary racing simulator hit the PlayStation in 1997 and revolutionized what players expected from a racing game.

With an extensive roster of real-world cars, meticulous attention to detail, and an emphasis on realistic driving physics, “Gran Turismo” became the ultimate virtual driving experience. You could spend hours customizing your vehicle, tweaking its performance, and meticulously fine-tuning every aspect.

The game’s career mode was a gearhead’s dream, offering a vast array of races and championships to conquer, earning you money to buy more cars and parts. It set the standard for future racing simulators and left an indelible mark on the gaming industry.

These three games encapsulated the thrill, fun, and innovation of ’90s racing games. They were the pinnacle of their time, capturing the imagination of gamers worldwide and paving the way for future racing titles.

Whether you preferred the high-speed action of Daytona, the off-road intensity of Sega Rally, or the realistic driving experience of Gran Turismo, these games left an enduring legacy in the hearts of racing enthusiasts everywhere.

What is New Star GP?

Later this year, we’ll have New Star GP, a retro-style open-wheel racing game. It caught my attention thanks to its awesome retro graphics. It reminded me of the old-school racing games that were popular in the ’90s and early 2000s. The visuals are vibrant and colorful, and speed is the name of the game. Don’t expect hyper-realism here, though.

In addition to the stylized retro visuals, New Star GP will feature cars and races from past years. When it launches in early access, there will be a career mode and a “championship mode,” offering 56 races across locations like Brisbane, Quebec, and Tokyo.

The single-player career mode will start in the ’80s and ’90s, with plans to expand into future decades during early access. The game will introduce new cars, tracks, and configurations along the way. The championship mode includes five separate championships, playable solo or in split-screen multiplayer for up to four players.

Despite being an arcade racer, New Star GP aims to offer some depth in gameplay. The developer, New Star, known for their soccer sim New Star Manager, promises a real challenge:

“While anyone can take the wheel and have success, those who want to truly master the game will want to make use of tire choice and wear, component reliability, slipstreaming opponents, fuel load, and even pit strategy.

Anything can happen in races, from catastrophic component failures and dynamic weather changes to tire blowouts and multi-car pileups.”

Surprisingly, New Star GP won’t spend much time in early access. The developers estimate it will last only 2–4 months, although that’s subject to change.

Final Words

I’m excited to give New Star GP a whirl.

It doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but it’s expected to hit Steam in a few weeks.
