My Favorite RPG Game
Why RPG games became my favorite genre
Growing up, I have played a ton of games starting with the original Nintendo. Back then, I guess it's safe to say that my favorite game was probably Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. I played that game a lot, along with others such as Super Mario, Metal Gear, Mario Kart and others. I only had the Sega Genesis and Nintendo to start and then later received a Super Nintendo. I played them everyday after school and on my days off. I was never a people person, so gaming is all I really did, along with watching TV or spending time with family. Down the line, I ended up receiving a Playstation and a Nintendo 64.
The Playstation and Nintendo 64 were a huge change from the Nintendo and Sega I used to play games on. The N64 had some great titles like Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64 and Conkers Bad Fur Day along with others that hooked me. The Playstation was where I found a lot of RPG games that drew me in. I was in a Gamestop where I saw Final Fantasy VII on the shelf. When I looked at the cover art and the back of the box, something just made me want to try it. When I got home, I immediately put the game in the console. I didn't have a memory card at the time, but I wanted to see what it was about. After loading it up and playing through the first Mako Reactor, I was immediately hooked. The turn based battle system, the characters and the way he environment looked just drew me in. The blocky characters didn't bother me at all and I just wanted to see where the story was going. Until I actually managed to get a memory card, I played as far as I could until my mom turned off the game, I died or the game froze or something similar. I would usually get through Midgar pretty easily after playing it so much, but I would usually stop around Junon. Once I finally managed to get a memory card, I actually finished the game. After finishing it, I immediately started new playthroughs with different materia setups, runs where I didn't use any materia and just trying to do everything possible. I tried to understand everything that was happening in the story and wanted to see everything to be seen like hidden scenes, optional bosses, maxed out and ultimate materia, ultimate weapons and anything else available.
After finishing the game so man times, I wanted too find other games that hooked me like that. I found other games like Suikoden, the Tales of series, Resident Evil and others. I noticed that I started leaning towards RPG games, but nothing really felt like Final Fantasy VII. I still played other genres, but something about the stories and gameplay of a lot of RPG games just drew me in. After so many years have passed, I still can't resist a good RPG game. I even replayed the original Final Fantasy VII from time to time. I eventually heard the news of the Final Fantasy VII Remake and I was never as excited for a video game releasing as that one. I played it on the day of release and loved that game as well and the graphics, battle system and expanded story just made things way better. I have a few issues with it, but then again, I had a few issues with the original and that didn't stop me from loving it. Is it better than the original? I can't say that at the moment. Until the remake is fully released, the original will have a higher mark for me.
There are a lot of RPG games that have come out over time like Persona 5 and later the expanded Persona 5 Royal. The Persona series is another one of my favorites. Its a spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series and has a really good story and gameplay as well. I could talk about games for a long time, but Final Fantasy VII was the game that got me hooked on trying out so many different types of RPG games. If I didn't play that, I'm not sure if I would be so into RPG games. Even if a game has bad reviews, I try them out to see if I would enjoy it.
