MUSYNX Nintendo Switch review

Music rhythm games are no longer in fashion

Music rhythm games are no longer in fashion. Spending 50p on DDR arcade machines, and having house parties where everyone plays a guitar to "Through The Fire And Flames", are all distant memories.

There will always be demand for disfavoured music genres. After a brief stint on mobile platforms, MUSYNX is now available on consoles as a music rhythm game featuring 90+ tracks. You can think of DDR but instead you will be flailing around, you'll be smashing at the buttons and touchscreen on your Switch.

MUSYNX is a great music gaming site. It has tons of content. PM Studios has promised to provide lifetime DLC for all users. This is more than 90 tracks. Although it is a lofty promise, and only time will reveal how much, it is difficult to feel disappointed with the content available on day one.

The songs are a mix of Asian pop, chiptune and metal, trap, classic EDM, and classical EDM straight from DDR. The cheese level in a lot of the songs is quite high. Think Stilton or Camembert that has been left on the windowsill for a day. You'll find the right music. However, I wouldn't expect anything less from this genre.

It's hard to find anything new in the tried-and-true rhythm formula. Its reactive music is a great addition. If you miss a note, it will not play. This is similar to Rock Band and Guitar Hero. You will feel more connected and immersive through this auditory feedback.

Another strength is the level of control that you have over the difficulty. There is an Easy and Hard mode, and you can choose between a 4-button or 6-button noteboard to change how MUSYNX works. You can fine-tune this further with a speed gauge, which allows you to select how many note lanes, how many notes are within those lanes, and the speed they approach.

However, how you are scored can be a mixed bag. You may be faced with some very difficult songs or settings, which can throw off a lot of notes. However, the system gives you a generous rating. You don't get penalized for hitting irrelevant notes and the note detection window can be quite large, so button-mashing may still be an option.

It's a strange case of too many notes. If you're frustrated by the number of missed notes, you can try button mashing to get a 'B or a 'C'. It is hard to believe that fewer notes with more strict scoring would have made it more appealing.

The controls can also slow down the experience. The D-pad and the face buttons will be used. You can re-map them, but it's not a natural-feeling layout. Although touchscreen can be used to eliminate button confusion, it is cumbersome in its own right, especially in 6K mode. It is also not possible to touch-control the interface completely, which is a mistake.

MUSYNX's bizarre presentation is the final. The levels are well-designed, providing visual feedback and not obscuring the action. The menus mix pixel art, arcadey user interface and manga illustrations. These menus are especially bizarre as they were sourced from different illustrators. It appears that someone has browsed DeviantArt using the keyword "anime" and downloaded what they liked.

MUSYNX, a fun music game, has a lot of content. The controls and scoring could be improved. It's not for everyone. But, it will appeal to rhythm lovers who are devoted.

MUSYNX is a quirky music game with oodles of content. It could have benefited from more thought put into the controls and scoring, and the corny presentation and soundtrack won’t appeal to everyone, but diehard rhythm fans will lap this up.
