In a previous post titled Here’s How to Use Streaming in Gaming and Esports, I spoke about streaming platforms such as Twitch and YouTube and their role in gaming and eSports. In this post, I will introduce you to a new streaming platform called Kick.

The world of online streaming has seen its fair share of consolidation and competition over the past few years, with the rise and fall of various platforms like Mixer and the streaming wars between YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch.

In this crowded space, Kick has emerged as a new player, marketing itself as a creator-friendly platform with favorable policies.

The site promises a 95–5 subscriber revenue split, a 100% split on Kicks, its regular donation service, and same-day payouts. It also boasts an innovative, exclusive creator program, clear terms of service, and rules around ethical gambling.

With backing from Tyler ‘Trainwreck’ Niknam, Kick has attracted big streamers like Adin Ross, Destiny, and Hikaru Nakamura, signaling that the platform is gaining momentum.

However, it remains to be seen if Kick can sustain this growth and compete with the mega platforms with the backing of some of the world’s biggest tech companies. Twitch, for example, has Amazon, YouTube has Google, and Facebook has Meta.

While Kick’s promises may seem too good to be true, the platform has already been controversial, including hiding its true owners and embedding Twitch streams for promotional purposes.

It remains to be seen if Kick can fulfill its vision of supporting small and mid-sized creators and integrating them into its platform or if it will be just another failed attempt to disrupt the crowded streaming space.

One of Kick’s biggest selling points is its revenue split policy. Unlike Twitch’s 50–50 split and YouTube’s 70–30 split, Kick promises a 95–5 subscriber revenue split, an incredibly generous offer.

This is on top of a 100% split on Kicks, its regular donation service, meaning creators can earn more money from their streams.

The platform also promises same-day payouts, a significant improvement over the monthly cheques offered by other platforms.

In addition to its revenue split policy, Kick has also introduced an exclusive creator program. It offers a steady income based on hours watched and total viewers, with an option for same-day payouts.

This is a significant departure from other platforms that rely solely on a creator’s subscriber count to determine their earnings. The program offers creators more stability and ensures they can earn a consistent income from their streams.

Kick’s terms of service have also been designed with clarity in mind, focusing on avoiding ambiguous bans.

This is a significant improvement over other platforms criticized for having vague and inconsistent rules around content moderation.

Kick also allows ethical gambling, which is a controversial practice that has been banned on other platforms like Twitch.

This has attracted some streamers specializing in gambling content, and Kick promises to moderate the practice to ensure it is conducted responsibly.

Despite these promising policies, Kick has already faced some controversy. The site’s true owners have been hidden, which has raised concerns about transparency and accountability.

Kick has also been accused of embedding Twitch streams for promotional purposes, violating Twitch’s terms of service. These incidents have raised questions about Kick’s legitimacy and trustworthiness.

Final Words

Kick’s success will ultimately depend on its ability to attract and retain talent.

The platform has already signed contracts with big names like Adin Ross and Hikaru Nakamura, but it will need to continue acquiring new talent to stay relevant.

Tyler ‘Trainwreck’ Niknam has asked creators and fans to give Kick a year to grow and properly implement its policies. If the platform can deliver on its promises, it could be a game-changer for creators, offering them more money, stability, and transparency than other platforms.

However, with the crowded streaming space and the backing of mega tech companies, Kick has a long way to go to compete.
