Indigo Pokemon League - Master Level

How I see each member of the Indigo Pokemon League if they were at their full potential

I have been watching SilphSpectre's Youtube series in which he goes through all the Pokemon owned by the Gym Leaders, Elite Four Members, Champions, and Rivals and constructs their best team. If you haven't already, be sure to follow the link below to watch his videos and subscribe to his channel.

SilphSpectre on Youtube

Silph's videos have inspired me to do my own list, but with a few tweaks.

  1. Instead of limiting myself to Pokemon that each trainer has owned, I will open it to Pokemon that were introduced in Kanto as well as any evolutions or regional variants those Pokemon received in later generations.
  2. These builds are meant to be in-game and will not be intended for competitive play.
  3. No Ubers or Legendaries, I do not like using them in-game and while the trainers in the Indigo League most likely could obtain them I will not include them here.
  4. Each trainer will have anywhere from 3 to 6 Pokemon of their specialty type, this will vary depending on the availability of the type and the team itself. Agatha will be the sole exception to this as Ghost is a hard type to find in Kanto.
  5. I will try to limit each team to one Pokemon from each evolutionary line, barring branch evolutions or regional variants.
  6. No Megas will be included and I will not be doing items, natures, abilities, or move lists, just the teams themselves.
  7. Only Gym Leaders and Elite Four Members from Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, and the Let's Go games will be featured below.

With all that out of the way let's get into the teams!

Brock - Guardian of Mt. Moon

First, we start with Brock, the Rock-Type Gym Leader of Pewter City. For his theme, I thought that he would be the one to protect Mt. Moon from being plundered for the fossils that lay beneath it and his team would reflect the time he spent protecting the mountain.

Aerodactyl and Kabutops are the Fossil Pokemon he uses, my apologies to Omastar but I was trying to avoid having two Pokemon of the same type combination on the team.

I originally had Golem on his team but felt that he would trade it for an Alolan Golem for the advantage of its secondary Electric-Type.

Clefable and Crobat, while not Rock types are Pokemon he would have befriended, caught, trained, and evolved while inside Mt. Moon.

Steelix is the final form of his Onix and it would make sense for him to evolve it, even if evolving Onix makes it lose its Rock typing.

Misty - Underwater Ballerina

Second, there is Misty, the Water-Type Gym Leader of Cerulean City. For her theme, I went with her gym's anime appearance and made her team the first mono-type of the list. Her team would be a part of her underwater show with each having various roles in the cast and crew.

Dewgong and Vaporeon tend to be cast in the "good" roles. I.E., the fairy godmother, the knight in shining armor, the prince charming, the rags to riches princess, etc.

Starmie and Politoed are the crewmembers with Starmie, her original ace, handling underwater effects while Politoed handles any effects at or near the surface.

Gyrados and Kingdra tend to be cast in the "evil" roles. I.E., the evil queen/king, the henchman, the dragon wreaking destruction, etc.

Lt. Surge - Power Plant Manager

The third is Lt. Surge, the Electric-Type Gym Leader of Vermilion City. For Surge's theme, I decided to put him in charge of the Power Plant as its manager.

Raichu and Jolteon would make sense for Surge to use, he is all for getting the most strategic advantage, and getting fully evolved Electric-Type Pokemon just with evolutionary stones would fit his MO perfectly.

In what many will consider being a strange twist, I have decided to give Surge Alolan Dugtrio. With his team's weakness to Ground and his proximity to Diglett Cave, I do feel it would make sense for him to train there and eventually capture one to train in the gym. With Vermilion being a port city he could easily trade it for an Alolan Diglett that would then evolve into Alolan Dugtrio.

Magnezone, Porygon-Z, and Electivire represent the technological upgrades the Power Plant has to offer which will benefit Lt. Surge and his team.

Erika - Fairy Garden Tender

Forth comes Erika, the softspoken Grass-Type Gym Leader of Celadon City. For her team, I feel like Erika would be the likely suspect of the gym leaders to include Fairy-Type Pokemon on her team.

Vileplume makes its return while Tangrowth and Exeggutor are the fully evolved forms of her Tangela and Exeggcute. Leafeon would be a new addition to her team but would fit in perfectly.

For the Fairy-Type Pokemon, I feel Galarian Weezing and Galarian Rapidash would be up Erika's alley with their sophisticated and elegant appearances.

Koga - Unseen Protector of the Safari Zone

Fifth comes Koga, the stoic Poison-Type Gym Leader of Fucshia City. For his team, I gave him a mono Poison-Type team which he uses as the Grand Ninja Master and the protector of the Safari Zone.

Crobat and Gengar are his scouts who help him patrol the Safari Zone and Weezing is used to lay down a smokescreen for escape.

Victreebel and Tentacruel help him navigate the Safari Zone while Alolan Muk is Koga's new ace.

Sabrina - Psychic Advisor to Silph Co.

Sixth is Sabrina, the Psychic-Type Gym Leader of Saffron City who I always battled out of order (I would always battle her before Koga). For her team's theme, I decided to make a monotype team based on her being the advisor to Silph Co.

She was able to obtain Mr. Rime, Alolan Raichu, and Galarian Slowking through her dealings with the company which made it easy for her to import their pre-evolutions.

Espeon and Slowbro make sense for her and add another speedy threat and defensive menace, respectively, to her team.

Alakazam remains her ace and still gives me nightmares to this day after many defeats it gave me when I was younger.

Blaine - Retired to a Tropical Island

Seventh is Blaine, the Fire-Type Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island which I always found weird, why have a Fire-Type Gym on an island... which is surrounded by water... that supposedly has a volcano we never actually see in the games? I digress. For his team, I made him the theme of him retiring to a tropical volcanic island.

Arcanine and Ninetales are his trusty Fire-Types which made the journey with him to the island.

Alolan Marowak and Bellosom are the fire dancers and hula dancers he meets on the island while Alolan Exeggutor wanders through the coconut trees near the shores.

Magmortar is the fully evolved form of his ace, Magmar, and represents the volcano on the island.

Giovanni - Boss of Team Rocket

Eighth and the final Gym Leader on this list is Giovanni, the absentee Ground-Type Gym Leader of Viridian City and leader of Team Rocket. For his team's theme, I gave him the theme of being the Boss of Team Rocket with more evil and powerful seeming Pokemon.

Dugtrio and Nidoking are returning members of his team and Rhyperior is the fully evolved form of another Pokemon he used, Rhyhorn.

Alolan Raticate and Perrserker are perfect fits for his team, through his dealing with Team Rocket he would easily be able to acquire their base forms and they have the evil aesthetic for his theme.

Kangaskhan returns as his ace, the rare Kanto Pokemon shows his drive to acquire rare Pokemon to use to further his own goals.

Lorelei - Ambassador from the Sevii Islands

The first Elite Four member we meet and the first on this list is Lorelei, the Ice-Type Master. For her team, I gave her a mono Ice-Type team which became possible with new additions from later generations.

Alolan Sandslash and Alolan Ninetales seem like they would be right up her alley with Alolan Sandslash's defense and Alolan Ninetales's beauty and ability to set up Hail.

Glaceon is the sole non-region variant Evolution to be added to her team. Its power and beauty make it a perfect fit for the team.

Cloyster, Jynx, and Lapras all make their returns on her team with Lapras remaining Lorelei's ace Pokemon.

Bruno - Steward of Victory Road

The second Elite Four member and second Fighting-Type master we meet (after the Fighting Dojo Master) is Bruno. For his team, I made him the Steward of Victory Road, and each having specific areas to help in.

Sirfetch'd and Scizor both help him maintain the area around the entrance on Route 22 and grass areas on Route 23.

Poliwrath also helps him maintain the area around the entrance on Route 22 and the flooded sections of Route 23.

Hitmontop, Steelix, and his ace Pokemon Machamp help Bruno keep the Victory Road tunnel safe for the many trainers who travel through it or remain inside to train.

Agatha - Reaper of Pokemon Tower

The third Elite Four member is the terrifying Ghost-Type master Agatha. Due to the limited nature of Ghost-Type in Kanto and my reluctance to include multiple Pokemon from the same line, I had to focus her team more on Poison to fill it out. For her team's theme, I made her the Reaper of Pokemon Tower, a title given to her due to the fierce way she protects the tower from anyone who means to harm it.

Weezing, Galarian Slowbro, and Crobat are primarily used to guard the ground level and entrance from trespassers when the tower does close each day.

Alolan Muk, Alolan Marowak, and Gengar are her way of controlling the Ghost-Type Pokemon and Mediums/Channelers who like to frequent the tower with each being super effective against them and Gengar being her signature Pokemon.

Lance - Dragon Master of Kanto

The final Elite Four member and Dragon-Type Master of Kanto is Lance. For his team I gave him a team of Dragons and their "cousins", so to say. Like Agatha and her ghosts, there is not enough Dragons to fill out Lance's team so I tried to find Pokemon that balances his team.

Charizard is a given return for his team despite it not being an actual Dragon-Type in its base form, and my no Mega Evolution rule will remain in effect here.

Steelix and Lapras will bring some added difficulty with their types countering or resisting the types his team would normally struggle with.

Kingdra and Alolan Exeggutor are new additions to the Dragon-Type which Lance did not have access to in Gen One but should be added to his team to give it more diversity with their second types.

Dragonite returns as Lance's signature Pokemon, but my one Pokemon per evolutionary line means only the one will make it onto the team.
