Fixing A Broken System

How to make Dead By Daylight Better.

Dead By Daylight is the top asymmetric horror game on the market. All though it is on the top, it has several problems that can be fixed. the game currently has issues with map design, balance issues, and "strategy" issues.

Many of the maps have safe pallets (pallets that when thrown down you can safely jump over and run around without fear of the killer being able to catch you) and unsafe pallets. Unfortunately as many of the new maps come out, there is an issue with where these pallets spawn on the map. Outside of the pallet located at the Killer's Shack, the availability of these pallets are very far and few between. While the random spawn of the pallets help keep the games fresh, it can also lead to terrible RNG that leaves players without any safe pallets in the match. A change to the RNG and possible locations of pallets can lead to a more consistent balance between safe and unsafe pallets.

As new killers and survivors are released, there seem to be no end to the amount of "unintended" interactions between new perks and killer abilities, or the perks and their reactions with other perks. When the Cursed Legacy DLC was released, The Oni's perk Nemesis had an unintended reaction with the killer The Legion allowing the killer to apply the deep wound status effect on a survivor and chase them without their terror radius. this caused the timer on deep wound to go down even as the survivor is chased which lead to the survivor eventually entering the dying state. While they did fix this interaction so that the timer did not go down, the chose to change how the deep wound effect works instead of changing the way the perk works. Going farther back from that, during the Lunar New Year event of 2018, the developers changed the way that pallet stuns and flashlight saves worked. While the killer was picking up a survivor if you time a pallet stun or flashlight blind right, you can cause the killer to drop the survivor. When the change happened, it was made that you can blind or hit the killer with a pallet at any time during the pick up animation would cause the killer to drop the survivor after the animation was over. Luckily through player backlash, they changed it back to a timing dependent save. Another balancing issue would be fixing the hitbox on The Huntress's hatchets. Currently the hitbox is ball shaped which leads to several unearned hits being registered. There are several times when a hatchet lands next to you or passes by you and will register as a hit. Simply changing the hitbox on the hatchet to the shape of the hatchet would lead to more accurate hits.

When it comes to multiplayer online games like Dead By Daylight, strategy can be key to winning the match. Unfortunately, strategies like "tunneling" (repeatedly downing the same player shortly after they are unhooked without chasing any other players) and face camping (hooking a player then standing directly in front of them until they are sacrificed on the hook without ever leaving). While there is a perk that discourages tunneling like decisive strike, there is no such perk or rule to keep a player from face camping. A simple way to keep players from face camping would be a game mechanic that either stops the hook progression timer from going down if the killer stays within a certain distance of the hook, or have the hook break and have the survivor be freed while applying the Endurance status effect on the player so they can't be downed by the killer after falling from the hook. Both of these changes would make face camping no longer worth the effort and give players a chance to play the game instead of spend the game on the hook.

Dead By Daylight may be broken in its current state but with a few simple changes the game can be more balanced and enjoyable.
