Capcom Finally Reveals 'Resident Evil 3'

And it's all we could have hoped for... so far.

Hey, remember that multiplayer Resident Evil game you weren’t sure you wanted to buy? Well, Capcom knew you’d be at an impasse and decided to make the decision for you - by bundling it with Resident Evil 3, scheduled to release on April 3, 2020. Wait, what’s that? A Resident Evil 3 remake, you ask? Yes, all of that speculation we’ve been doing for the past week and a half based on leaks was accurate - we are getting that remake to Resident Evil 3 we’ve been pining for.

The original promo images that snuck onto the Internet with a fluffy-haired Carlos Oliveira, a very toothy Nemesis, and a redesigned former STARS member Jill Valentine were real. You may have scoffed at some of the design choices, but don’t worry, everything is looking so much better in Capcom’s tease shown during Sony’s December 10th State of Play broadcast.

Sneaky little Capcom started the broadcast by saying we're being given an exclusive look at Project Resistance’s recently unannounced campaign portion. Confusing, yes, since we were all highly anticipating the reveal of the series’ latest remake. Then, a series of flashes of familiar locations; Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield and Sherry Birkin; and a countdown timer played beneath scattered newscasts clearly covering the downfall of Raccoon City.

Moody.

Alas, it was all a ploy! We then move to a first-person segment of someone running from a lumbering beast through deserted environments. Before long, sneaky ‘lil Capcom revealed we were following Jill Valentine, the deuteragonist of the original Resident Evil. And that lumbering beast? Well, of course, it’s Nemesis!

Good ‘ole Brad “Chickenheart” Vickers, Mikhail Viktor, Nikolai Zinoviev, and Carlos also received some screentime, alongside some of Raccoon City’s hapless citizens. Living citizens, I should clarify, running for safety. So, we at least know the campaign will likely follow the structure of the original Resident Evil 3, taking place before and after the events of Resident Evil 2. There may have been a very brief glimpse at gameplay snuck into the reveal trailer, which looks to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor’s remake.

What's wrong, Brad? No helicopters to run away in?
Oh, sweet unknowing Carlos.

It’s a relatively quick flash of scenes, but it looks like we’ll see how Nemesis came about, return to the Raccoon Police Department, get to see our toothed foe take down a helicopter, and see Jill infected by the T-Virus. Here’s hoping we still revisit the clock tower, traipse around the graveyard, and face off against the Grave Digger worm.

So, we all knew deep down that Capcom was coming with the Resident Evil 3 reveal. There were enough leaks to let us know it was around the corner. What so many of us didn’t suspect, however, was that Project Resistance, the 4v1 online multiplayer game, would be tacked onto it.

Resistance entered into a very exclusive beta recently and was met with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Players play as one of four survivors or a mastermind that controls Umbrella’s goody bag of BOWs in a tug-of-war. Race to the objective or impede the path of others in the third attempt at a Resident Evil multiplayer.

Adding the multiplayer component to Resident Evil 3 is a brilliant move by Capcom, which has tried (unsuccessfully) taking Resident Evil into a competitive environment before with Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps. If it sticks, that’s a win for Capcom. If not? They can fall back on what is sure to be a quality single-player experience in Resident Evil 3.

Despite being tied to Sony's State of Play, Resident Evil 3 will also be released on Xbox One and PC in April.
