Actions do Have Consequences (Part 1)

Even in fantasy worlds

This is the story of how my very first Dungeons and Dragons party made a huge mistake in selling a weapon, and then had to save the world because of it. I'm going to split this into a few parts for several reasons. This story covers multiple in-game levels, adventures, and settings. Many of these events will be made into smaller stories if they don't directly tie into this plot line.

Here's some brief backstory about the party. We have 5 members; Voric: High Elf Fighter. Faulk: Half-Orc Barbarian. Korrin: Dragonborn Monk. Dagless: Half-Elf Bard. Nerithyra (Me): Tiefling Rogue. Voric's arch nemesis is named Charles DeGull, he plagiarized Voric's book of monsters (Canonically the Monster Manual) and the party hates him more than anything. This will be relevant later.

Now on to the beginning of our catastrophe. The party, at the time of our last adventure, had 4 sentient weapons that want to end the world; Tinderstrike, Ironfang, Drown, and Windvane. While in our town of Asfalis we decided to give the Monk's, namely Korrin's sister, Windvane to keep safe in the monastery. After doing so, Faulk decided it would be a good idea to, not safely store Ironfang, but sell him.

Despite party protests, Faulk sold Ironfang to the biggest weapons manufacturer on the continent; Velegard Armaments. He got around 16,000 gold from it. We had a feeling it would come back to bite us later, but we carried on.

After the recent poisoning of the Grand Magistrate, the continent needed a new one. Elections were to be held in the southern nation of Somptu. Dagless was a member of high society and was therefore supposed to be present for the elections. The party heads towards Dashmena, capital of Somptu.

An important bit of information about Dashmena: The city is structured much like Sharn. It has an Undercity that is able to be travelled on foot. The rest of the city is floating and connected by walkways or accessed by flying carpet or teleportation.

It was a rather long, but uneventful journey down and we arrived at the capital fine. Then we ran into our first problem; Magical Customs. The city was well guarded and the party housed not one, but two highly wanted criminals. They are not who you think they are.

Outside the city we come up with a game plan. Voric, Korrin and I were to act as guards for Dagless, who was posing as a noble from another house. (I can't recall the name, as it was from a session before I ever joined and only came up this one time.) Faulk would be Dagless' "assistant". Dagless always liked to keep swords between him and his problems. Plan sorted, we head in to the guard house.

The guards are doubtful of Dagless' identity and want to search us guards. They immediately find some old potions we got from Flannigan, a very sketchy alchemist in Asfalis. They test them, and they are in fact poison. This is a problem. They take the three of us guards to a separate room to search and identify us. So three of us in one room, alone.

Now seemed a good time to tell the party that I was, in fact, highly wanted in Somptu. If they found us out, I would be sent in for zombification. We didn't want that, surely.

Dagless and Faulk manage to get out fine and start searching for us. They see the guard that lead us off, carrying a chart. Faulk decides they're going to knock him out, Dagless take his place, and they'll find us that way. So, they do just that.

Upon finding us, they manage to convince the guards we're clean and start walking out with us. This is when Faulk decides we can't just leave that guard there to wake up. So we take him, steal a flying carpet, and head to the Undercity. We tie him up, and lay him on the ground. Everyone thinks this is good enough, he'll take awhile to wake up, surely.

Everyone except for Faulk, that is. No, Faulk decides we have to kill this poor guard. So Faulk "gently" nudges this guy off a cliff, rolled into the stolen flying carpet. To help clear our consciences, Dagless informs us that he beat his children.

After this we go to a meeting where all the candidates for Grand Magistrate gave speeches and we met them afterwards. There was Sybille Trelawney, Julien Karrone, and Charles DeGull. The one and only. As much as we hated it, DeGull's plans made the most sense. Trelawney wanted to turn the continent into a monarchy. Karrone wanted to do a reverse crusade and abolish religion in the north. DeGull, however, wanted to make peace between Diamont in the north and Somptu in the south.

After this we had about a months time before the elections. We decided to stay within the city and do some exploring. It was with this that we came to hate Karrone far more. (This will be a separate story as it is a far more detail-oriented adventure).

After our first exploration we were tasked by a group with getting close to DeGull. We of course hated this, still. We set up a meeting with him to discuss how we could help him in his efforts for Grand Magistrate.

His Answer was to put on a show for the people. This of course meant us fighting a monster. We chose a Froghemoth. We knew we could beat it, but it would be enough of a challenge that it would be entertaining.

One of Voric's friends had connections in the monster handling world and we went to him next. Eggoric agreed to help us, but we had to send at least one of our own with. With this decision Korrin and Voric both were sent to retrieve it. That left the bard, the barbarian, and the rogue alone. For three days.

What did we decide to do? We pulled a heist, of course. I won't put all the details in here, but at the end of the heist we found out about sentient suits of armor being made, and made 7,000 gold.

When Korrin and Voric returned we had the fight with the Froghemoth. During said fight, a debt collector jumped into the ring next to Dagless.

"Dagless Darkwater! It is you after all! That wand you wield is highly valuable and therefore I have the right to collect it as per your debt!" He bellowed, pulling out a scroll. Dagless was very familiar with this and had an idea. Nerithyra was close by and so he tossed her the wand.

"Nerithyra you can have this back now!" He shouted and we both instantly regret it. Now Kafka and Sideon's debt collections agency knew we were both here. And travelling together.

We learned the debt collectors name was Reeve, and somehow managed to escape without being caught by him.

When the party met back up at the hotel, we started figuring out what to do. Now that Dagless and Nerithyra had been exposed, there weren't a lot of places in the city to hide.

As we started to decide a rumbling started, like an earthquake. We could hear rocks splitting and headed outside to see what was going on. It wasn't long before we saw a giant Earth Elemental begin forming in the Undercity. The city itself started to split as the elemental began rising from the rubble. We needed to get out fast.

We hopped onto our flying carpet, which was acquired at the time of the heist. It wasn't long before we were spotted by patrols of the sentient suits of armor. When the Elemental stood straight up we could see an Eye of Tharizdun on its chest. That was not a good sign. Faulk thought we could take all of them. He had Dagless Dimension Door him to the elemental but they were soon thrown off, into the Undercity.

Still being pursued, Voric, Korrin and Nerithyra had to keep moving. They made it out of the city safely, but had no idea where the other two were at.

Meanwhile in the Undercity Faulk and Dagless had to try to avoid being crushed and escape the city. They managed to escape, but it was very close.

The party was reunited in Asfalis, with the knowledge of a giant elemental destroying the south. Everyone on the party except for Faulk realized why this was happening. Now we had to decide how to proceed in stopping this elemental terrorizing Somptu and retrieve a certain sentient weapon.
