This article brings you through the years of gaming and how it has evolved through new technology.

Back then, games were all just pixels, simple controls, and non-demanding specs. Now, games need very fast processors, good specs, and great HD graphics to play current games. In the data of the video game database API, it has shown that gamers have purchased millions of consoles every time a new one comes out. Most of the gamers, especially the young ones, tend to forget or not know how consoles became what it is today. So to appreciate gaming and gaming consoles, let us take a trip down to memory lane.

The Seventies

In 1971, Computer Space was released and it was the first arcade game that is for commercial use. In the same year, a game named The Oregon Trail was designed for the teletype and it was adapted to computers in 1973 and was sold in diskettes in 1978. The year 1972 was the year that the first game console was released and this was called as the Magnavox Odyssey. This console could be plugged in a TV and it has 12 games including the game Ping Pong.

Another game named Pong was released in 1973 and it was originally used for company training. It instead became a successful arcade game and this game opened up to more development of games.

The Eighties

In 1980, Pac-Man was released in Japan and the U.S. This game was a great hit and it sold over 100,000 units in the first year and gained one billion dollars. Pac-Man was also the first game to feature the main character. Donkey Kong was then released in 1981 and it also became a big hit. This game was the first to have multiple levels.

Tetris was then created in 1984 and the Soviet government held the rights to the game. But then, it was bought from the Soviet government in 1988 and was brought to a company in Japan to release it for the Game Boy. The Game Boy was released in 1989 and this was the start of handheld gaming. The handheld console has been revamped for the Game Boy Color and the Game Boy Pocket.

The Nineties

The nineties started when Super Nintendo was released to contest against the Sega Genesis. The latter triumphed with the use of popular titles like Legend of Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong. Another battle of the consoles happened in the year 1995 when Sega Saturn and the PlayStation were released in the same year. The PlayStation console sold out more than the Saturn. Most of the games in PlayStation were in 3D because games were disk-based as they were affordable to produce and to buy. A year later, the Nintendo 64 was released which compared to the PlayStation console, allows to run games that have 64-bit graphics and 3D graphics.

The Early 2000s

In the year 2000, the PlayStation 2 was released. It became revolutionary due to the beautiful graphics and it was better than the graphics of a computer at the time. A year later, Xbox was released where the console includes features such as Ethernet, 8 GB hard drive, and the ability to play DVDs. In 2005, Xbox 360 was released to combat against the Wii and PlayStation 3. In the same era, mobile games started and it had grown ever since.

Looking at how much gaming has been through was fascinating. It has changed from old and bulky consoles to new and sleek ones. As of now, according to video game database API, there are currently 1.2 million games and continuously growing.
