RPGs are some of the most successful games of today’s times—and it’s easy to see why. No other genre offers that unparalleled sense of scale, customizability, and freedom. RPGs let us experience vast, interesting worlds and stories, supplemented with diverse and engaging gameplay.

2019 is gearing up to be a fantastic year for fans of the genre. A lot of great titles have already been released, and there are still a few promising games that we’re anxiously awaiting and eager to try. Let’s explore this quick list of the eight Best RPGs of 2019.

1. Biomutant

Biomutant is an upcoming action RPG being developed by Experiment 101. It will be published by THQ Nordic at an, as of yet unannounced date in 2019. It will be available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Biomutant will be set in an open-world environment and played from the third-person perspective. Players will be able to customize their characters up to the finest details, and all choices will have consequences on gameplay and stats.

Players will be able to cybernetically augment their characters, as well as customize and craft a wide variety of weapons. A karma system has also been announced, and the actions and choices of players will have consequences and effects on the story. Biomutant is going to be very innovative and original—surely one of the Eight Best RPG games.

2. Greedfall

Greedfall is an upcoming action RPG being developed by Spiders. It will be published on September 10, 2019, by Focus Home Interactive for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Greedfall has a unique visual identity, inspired by 17th century Baroque Art from Europe. It will be focused on delivering a strong, traditional RPG experience. The setting will be filled with various factions, all of which have their interests and goals.

Diplomacy, stealth, and combat will all be valid options. The character customization options will be vast, and the skill system will be very detailed. The developers also promise a gripping storyline, as well as unique and memorable companions. We’re excited to play Greedfall and are confident it deserves a place in the Best RPGs 2019 Game list.

3. Dragon Age 4: The Dread Wolf Rises

Dragon Age 4: The Dread Wolf Rises is the working title of the next installment of this esteemed franchise. It is being developed by BioWare and will be published by Electronic Arts. A release date hasn’t been announced. The series is expected to return to Microsoft Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox, although support for last gen consoles hasn’t yet been announced.

No matter how secretive the project may be, we know what Dragon Age means. Dragon Age 4 will surely feature a memorable cast of companion characters, an incredibly-written story, and tons of replayability.

After the latest game in the series, we can also expect a shift to more open-world gameplay, as well as resource-based and strategic elements. According to the trailers and released material, the game will bring the story of Solas and the Inquisitor to a conclusion.

4. Darkborn

Darkborn is an upcoming action-fantasy RPG being developed by The Outsiders. It will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. No release date has been announced, and the details surrounding publishing are still not known, but we are confident it will be one of the eight best RPGs games.

Players take control of a monstrous creature that uses dark, magical abilities. It’s an interesting perspective, the opposite of what we’re used to. But the player takes on the role of prey, not a predator.

Players will be able to control multiple generations of darkborn, and there are three unique stages—whelp, gaunt and ylder, all of which have different abilities. Finding other captured or dying darkborn will give players new, powerful skills to use.

We’re excited to see how the nemesis system, first popularised in Shadow of Mordor, will figure into this game. It’s one of the most exciting RPGs games that has been announced.

5. Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers

Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers is an expansion pack for Final Fantasy XIV, an MMORPG released on July 2, 2019. It is available for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and OS X.

Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers is a content-filled expansion that breathes new life into an already great MMORPG. Players can enjoy two new classes, the Gunbreaker and Dancer, which both have distinct playstyles, and two new races, the tiger-like Hrothgar and rabbit-like Vi.

Shadowbringers also increases the level cap from 70 to 80 and adds expansive and engaging new areas. Players can also enjoy new dungeons, new alliance raids, and a whole new set of challenging eight-player raids. The voice-acting and writing of this expansion are superb. Shadowbringers deserves its spot on the Best RPGs 2019 Game List.

6. Divinity Fallen Heroes

Divinity Fallen Heroes is a tactical RPG being developed by Larian Studios for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and macOS. The release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Divinity Fallen Heroes is a spin-off of the wildly popular Divinity Original Sin 2. It isn’t a true sequel—it is a continuation of the story, but the gameplay will differ significantly from previous titles.

In Fallen Heroes, an airship will serve as a central hub between missions, where players can make decisions which impact the flow of the story. Larian is crafting 60 missions for this game, but a single play through should last about 25 to 30 missions.

The game is designed to be a lot more concentrated, but also replayable. Combat will no longer feature an initiative queue, and all of your squad mates will act simultaneously. This new title in the Divinity series will surely be among the Eight Best RPGs games.

7. Monster Hunter World Iceborne

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is an upcoming expansion pack for the critically-acclaimed action RPG. It will be available on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and the release has been scheduled for September 2019.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a major expansion, which will finish the story of Monster Hunt World and tie up any loose ends. Players will be able to explore a new, exciting tundra-like region, called Hoarfrost Reach. The new region will feature unique weather effects, as well as a new home base. Hoarfrost Reach is going to be the largest region in the series to date.

Iceborne will feature a lot of new monsters to hunt, as well as a greater difficulty—master rank, a brand new quest tier with very powerful rewards.

8. The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is an upcoming RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment. It will be published by Private Division. The game will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on October 25, 2019.

The Outer Worlds will be played from the first-person perspective and feature both me-lee and ranged combat. Players will encounter and recruit various NPC companions, who will assist players in combat and have their own unique stories.

A spaceship will serve as a central hub and fast travel point for players. Weapons will be customizable, and the skill tree will feature options that can bypass combat entirely, such as persuasion and stealth.

An interesting and unique feature will be the flaw system—if a player repeatedly fails in certain tasks or dies to certain enemies, they will suffer a permanent debuff—but all of these flaws will also come with perks and benefits. We’re very excited to play a game like this - especially from a developer renowned for making good RPG games.
