Over the years i have played hundreds of indie horror games and i would like to share some of my top picks in no particular order. Good indie horror games can be hard to come by, hope this list helps!

1. Outlast

If there was one game that everyone would recommend, that would be Outlast. In Outlast you are a journalist who is investigating what is happening inside psychiatric hospital, full of mentally ill patients. Outlast is a true masterpiece in the horror genre.

2. The Mortuary assistant

In the mortuary assistant you work as a mortician preparing people to be buried. While on the job you slowly start to see odd things happening and later on you will start seeing ghosts and supernatural beings that are not so friendly.

3. Amnesia the Bunker

In amnesia the bunker you are trapped inside a World War 1 bunker. While you try to find your way out of the bunker, you will get chased by a AI-driven monster. Amnesia the bunker offers lots of monster chasing, exploration and puzzle solving.

4. Summer of 58'

Summer of '58 a horror game that focuses on jumpscares, walking and atmospheric environment. The main character goes to russia to investigate abandoned camp of "Yunost". Locals say the camp is habited by restless souls and supernatural beings. Summer of 58 is a intense walking simulator experience, where you have to carefully interact with all items in to progress in the game. This is one my most favorite walking simulator games so far.

5. Chilla's Art Horror games

Chilla's art is a developer that has made big amount of japanese horror games, Listing them all here would make it very long. I would recommend starting from The radio Station, The convenience store, The ghost train and inunaki tunnel. In short the games are VHS style psychological horror games with various different stories. Note that you can find all his games by typing chilla's art in steam search.

6. Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle

Daymare 1994 Sandcastle quickly became one of my top indie horror games. The game is a third-person survival horror that is driven by story. Play as agent Dalila and spy on the H.A.D.E.S research center. The research center has been doing human experiments, turning them into mindless monsters and zombies. You must put a stop to this research and these monsters.

7. Poppy Playtime

Poppy playtime is one of the most scariest mascot horror games out there. In Poppy playtime you are trapped inside a toy factory, filled with dangerous toys that have become alive and are after you. Poppy playtime offers scary moments, simple puzzles and a great time.

8. Wrong floor

Wrong floor is one of the most scariest indie horror games i have played. The game starts as you enter a elevator that takes you in to a wrong floor. The floor is dark, atmospheric and maniac is roaming the floor. The game focuses on true fear and atmospheric environment. While it is a very short, it is a must play for anyone interested in horror games.

9. Oxide Room 104

Oxide room 104 a horror game that combines escape room gameplay and action. You are abducted and trapped inside an old motel, left naked and wounded, you must find your way out. Getting out is not as easy as it sounds, you must solve puzzles and defeat supernatural monster blocking your way.

10. Omori

Omori is a game that at a first glance may seem innocent and cute, but soon you will find out that is not the case. Omori has some of the most interesting storytelling, i have seen and is a masterpiece in psychological horror. The game may feel very depressing or lift heavy emotions.

11. MaDiSoN

MADiSON is a first person psychological horror game, featuring disturbing gameplay and an unsettling and compelling narrative. Play as Luca, and endure the brute torture of MADiSON, a demon that has forced him to continue a ritual started decades ago, making him commit abominable acts. Use instant camera to survive this torture and dive deeper into it.

12. Layers of Fear

Layers of fear, a psychological horror walking simulator. You take control of a psychedelic hallucinating painter whose only purpose is to finish his painting, the magnum opus. Explore a beautiful victorian era mansion and finish the painting at all cost, if you can.

13. From the Darkness

From the darkness is not a very well known game, but it is some of the most scariest indie games out there, from the same creator as wrong floor. A psychological horror game with a very intense and scary atpmoshere. Game that focuses on true fear and atpmosphere.

14. Blair Witch

Blair witch is a horror game inspired by the lore of "blair witch". A boy has disappeared in the woods and as a former police officer you volunteer to the search. Mysterious forces and supernatural surround the woods of black hills forest and the search turns in to your worst nightmare.

15. Fears to Fathom

Fears to Fathom is a episodic psyhological horror experience, meaning that each chapter tells a short different story. So far there has been 4 episodes Fears to Fathom - Home Alone, Carson house, norwood hitchike and ironbark lookout. With a atmospheric VHS design and jumpscares that scare you for life, fears to fathom is a excellent recommendation.
