I sat at my kitchen table this morning staring at a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. it was made on basic store brand white bread, the one most of us have to buy because we're all balancing a household budget on the edge of a fucking razor. I've bought this stupid cheap bread for years and it's usually so soft and squishy, it falls apart while you're eating it. Not today. It was stiff and dense and weird and rubbery... I took a bite and it just felt off. Fake.
Something is wrong with the food we're sold and fed in this country and I'm sick of pretending it's normal. We're living through a time where families are squeezed for every single last penny. Rent is absurd, and not a single landlord I have ever had has any interest in fixing or upgrading anything, no matter how much you ask... but they're quick to slap on a late fee if you pay even 5 minutes late. Electric bills are sky high but are promising that you're saving so much by using whatever bullshit plan they're peddling. Insurance costs a small fortune, but you still have massive co-pays and must stay within a certain network and MAYBE they will pay out if something happens.
Paychecks are eaten alive by taxes before we even see them. Where is that money going? Not into making sure our kids have access to clean, safe, real fucking food. Nope...
Billions of our dollars are pushed into foreign wars that literally nobody fucking wants and corporate tax write offs.
The Obama administration alone used American tax dollars for an obscene amount of stupid fucking things. 4.6 million was used to put automatic pizza making machines in aircrafts. $331,000 was used in 2014 to give couples voodoo dolls that represented their spouse to measure 'hangry' behavior. In 2021, 1.3 million was spent to point out the fucking obvious... bad news decreases a person's happiness level. No fucking shit. I could have told them that for free.
And his admin wasn't the only one who has done stupid shit with our money. The Trump admin used 1.8 million to administer cocaine to birds to find out whether or not it made them sexually aggressive. George W. Bush used 1 million to study how moneys react to gambling. Bill Clintons admin approved $400,000 for a pile of fuckin dirt and called it 'art'. Meanwhile, there are children going hungry or slowly being poisoned with bullshit ingredients. There are multiple houses sitting around empty while people walk around homeless because they don't have enough magic pieces of paper to buy their way into one of the EMPTY FUCKING HOUSES.
While the people in charge are out spending billions of dollars to watch beetles have sex, average parents are standing in grocery aisles trying to calculate if they can afford real apples or if they have to settle for chemical laden snacks to keep their kids full until next pay day.
And God forbid a struggling family uses food stamps (which are paid for by our own money) because then society wants to label you lazy. So, $592,000 to find out why monkeys throw poop- good use of tax dollars. $300 monthly to feed a family of 5 on food stamps- Bad. Lazy. Leech like behavior. Got it.
As if $300 is making any kind of dent in a family's grocery bills in the first place. I don't even qualify for assistance, by the way; most people surprisingly don't. I still buy the cheapest products available for the most part. Name brand? Barely heard of her. And still, our grocery bill is around $800 monthly, if not more. And to top it off, the produce is molding before you even get it home. The milk is sour in 3 days. And the bread, what even is it?
Fresh baked good aren't any better. These donuts were bought as a treat for my kids, and this is what they looked like when we brought them home from the grocery store.

If you try to bypass the bullshit and buy organic, non-GMO, whole foods... the checkout total is more like a fucking mortgage payment. $10 for a bag of 5 apples? Insane. I don't have extra money for organic. Most families don't even have a safety net anymore. It feels like we're being pushed into real life Hunger Games where the options are to go broke buying overpriced, non-toxic food or slowly poison our children with cheap, hyper processed franken bread because it's the only thing that fits the budget.
It's not like they made a mistake. They're doing this for maximum profit. They strip out real ingredients and then flood products with synthetic emulsifiers and preservatives to make them sit on a shelf for three years. They couldn't care less what happens to us or our health.
The design isn't built to keep us healthy, it's to maximize profit margins. Real food spoils too fast because of fungi and bacteria... and for processed food corps, spoilage is a financial liability. So, they throw in tons of preservatives and antimicrobials which prevent decay. Now the bread can "safely" sit in warehouses and on shipping trucks indefinitely without rotting. Yummy.
These chemicals disrupt cellular processes in microbes to prevent fungal growth. When you consume them, they can alter gut microbiomes which can lead to things like gut dysbiosis and inflammation.
Emulsifiers and stabilizers are added to plenty of our foods as well. Real oil and water separate, and natural fats turn rancid when exposed to oxygen over time. Synthetic emulsifiers bind water and oil permanently, which prevents white bread from crumbling and keeps spreads smooth. They also erode the mucus lining of the intestines which degrades the gut barrier and allows food toxins to seep inside the intestines leading to leaky gut syndrome, IBS, and autoimmune disorders.
Then we have seed oils. Butter and olive oil cost more and oxidize quickly. Seed oils resist oxidization and can last years on shelves for a fraction of the cost. they're also responsible for cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, and Type 2 diabetes.
Last but not least, refined carbs and high fructose corn syrup. They take out all of the wheat germ and bran which strips away fiber and vitamins. It also allows food engineers to trick your brains dopamine pathway into continuous consumption. Now it hits your digestive track as pure glucose and causes insulin spikes and fatty liver disease.
Bottom line, our food is created to prolong shelf life, not human life. We are trading away our hunger for chronic illness. Love that for us.
The result is a trip that starts in the grocery aisle and ends up in the doctor's office. Our kids are dealing with these issues with their guts and health at rates we've never seen before. Our gut microbiomes are being decimated by chemical additives, and then the medical industry turns around and charges us thousands of dollars to treat those very illnesses our food supply created.
It's a vicious, profitable loop... that we have to pay for with our health AND our money. I'm at my breaking point. Public safety should at the very least start with what we put on our family's dinner table. These corporations need to be forced to stop treating us and our children like lab rats for their profit margins. We have every right to be furious. Stop fucking poisoning us.
