Rise And Fall Of Society: Charting Civilization’s Uneven Rise

Accurate, scientific, and insightful, Rise and Fall of Society charts the impacts and consequences of societal change on the size of the world's population. It starts with the 11,000 year history of farming (focusing on agriculture) and transitions through the dramatic revolutions of history, making the case that, after WWII, societies saw some of the worst declines in growth and population numbers since human history began. The book charts its findings in a number of ways. There are historical maps, including maps of civilizations, cultural milestones, and inter-disciplinary studies of demographics. These charts help readers "get a taste of what life was like in a given place at a given time," Roser writes.

Redesigning The Wheel: Restructuring The Product Market-Oriented Design Activity by Chip Heath and Dan Heath; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt,

This smart book would make a great gift for any designer, inventor, or business leader. The authors first explain the way in which the marketplace (and the strategies that designers need to adopt to succeed) have changed over the past few decades. And then they challenge each reader to take one of the activities that he or she is working on and to reinvent that activity, focusing on sustainability, effectiveness, and time-to-market.

Bent on seeing other companies embrace A/B testing in their product development efforts, Nick Halsey set out to help the leaders of large global companies implement what's been shown to be a great technique for gaining a competitive edge in today's more competitive business environment. His book shows how to test and improve the product funnel, and to understand how to convert the testing into action. As Halsey puts it, "the product development team will be tested and challenged to be more creative and flexible in their thinking."

Wonders Of The Human Mind: The Hidden Dimensions Of Our Secretly Expanding Collective Intellect

Wonders Of The Human Mind is "the ultimate guide to the human mind" — and the first book ever published on the subjects of the brain, consciousness, evolution and cognition. More than just a handbook on how human intelligence works, the book goes in-depth to explain how the world's leading minds have arrived at their findings. Exploring new science in a multidisciplinary manner, including theory, neuroscience and experiments, it shows how profound changes in consciousness and nature drive human evolution, and what we still have to learn to fully

Acclaimed author Julián Marías wants to celebrate the art of telling a life story and exploring the impact of a person's life.

My entire life, I’ve lived in Eastern Europe. Its history, culture, and politics have played an increasingly heavy role in my daily life, with its epicenters being both Poland and Russia. I can still recall, with some of my fondest memories, first glimpses of communist-era society, the era of avant-garde Poland and the high points of Russian-Polish relations.

Despite my fascination with this Eastern Europe, there was always one particular country whose influence I’ve felt the most acutely. This country, while possessing many of the same characteristics as other Eastern European countries, stands apart from the rest of them. As it turns out, it also belongs to the very continent that I am so enamored of. From its history and culture to its craftsmanship, architecture and cuisine, Ukraine has a special appeal to me.

It wasn’t until I came to know its history and culture that my admiration for Ukraine grew. Its history is tied to those of surrounding regions, but it stands as a singular force in its own right. Its history is laced with violence and hardship, of course.
