A typical firework consists of a shell with gunpowder inside. The shell is made of cardboard and paper mache, forming a hemisphere. Depending on the size of the shell, it can range from 2.5 inches to 16 inches and even larger on special occasions. To launch a firework, it is placed in a plastic tube called a mortar.

Fuses and Colors

Fuses play a crucial role in fireworks. We tested different types of fuses, from slow-burning black match to faster quick match and time fuse. These fuses allow for precise timing in the launch and explosion of fireworks.

The colors of fireworks are created using various chemical compositions. Each element absorbs energy during combustion and releases light of a specific color when the electrons drop back to lower energy levels. Copper ions, for example, produce a bright blue color, while other elements create red, green, and orange hues.
