Australia is a continent and a country and the sea is a local region. It is similar to the United States of America and the North American continent. Oceania is a vast ocean that includes a few small islands called the Pacific Ocean!

Australia is about the size of the United States, so it is not included in the definition of Oceania. In the 19th century apartheid, Australia had separate sects called Southern Oceania, and in East Asia, it was called Western Oceania. Oceania is defined as an economic zone, not a continent. So while Australia is on the Australian continent, it is also part of the Oceania region, with small island nations separated from any other region such as Asia or South America.
