We, most of us reading this are fortunate enough to have access to our basic needs but not all are so fortunate. The rural areas of developing countries and 3rd world countries are still struggling to meet their basic needs like access to safe drinking water, food, shelter or basic health care. However, in this modern century, well-established people from 1st and 2nd world countries are trying to help those in need, to improve the quality of lives of poverty. From scientists to ordinary, creative people, they are all using their field expertise to invent products to help those in poverty in whatever ways they can. Nowadays, even businesses and new organizations are popping up to solely help the ones in need or donate a percentage of their revenue to specific causes to help the ones in poverty.

Here are 5 simple, smart inventions that are changing the lives of poverty.

1 Shoe That Grows

Children grow fast, outgrowing clothes and shoes quickly. This is why you will see most kids in poverty communities of third-world countries walk barefoot as their parents cannot afford to buy shoes every time they grow out of them. Sometimes, the parents willingly hesitate to buy shoes because they know they can not use them for the long term as they cannot be used in the long run. It is also difficult to come by donated shoes to replace their kids' outgrown shoes as they grow up.

As a result, children walking barefoot outside of their homes are exposed to many soil-transmitting diseases and parasites that cause serious illnesses and even death. Many of the children getting infected cannot get the proper treatment. This further imposes more health risks.

Shoes That Grows has come up with a simple but intelligent solution to help children in developing regions around the world by introducing and donating shoes that expand to 5 sizes! Shoes That Grows also made sure of making them out of a long-lasting material and not use technical gears that could break or need to be replaced. The shoe expands on 7 sides- heel strap, top strap, four side straps, and the hook-and-loop toe piece- to grow 5 sizes. These are crafted beautifully to make the user comfortable no matter the size they adjust to. These are available for children of all ages. For every $20 donated, a pair of Shoes That Grows is provided to a kid in need of humanitarian aid. To learn more about Shoes That Grows helping kids in need, check their page.

2 Hippo Roller

In many rural parts of the world, people have to walk long distances to collect clean water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Normally women, children, and elders are the ones that have to walk long distances to collect water for the household while the men are out to earn for the family. It is a very time-consuming, physically demanding, and dangerous task as they balance 5 litres of water buckets on their heads and travel long distances. There are also dangers of assault and harassment as they have to travel through deserted areas alone to collect water.

Hippo-Roller is a much-needed invention for those who have to travel long distances to get to clean water points. It is designed to transport water of 90 litres easily by pulling or pushing it on the ground, reducing the labour work significantly. It is made to stand tough, rural terrain and to last for 5 to 10 years! As they can transport larger quantities of water in one trip, the task has become less time-consuming. As a result, children can go to school instead of collecting water and getting an education to better their lives. This also enables women to pursue a career to improve their family's financial situation. 65,000 Hippo-Rollers have been distributed to 56 countries so far, helping 650,000 beneficiaries.

4 Solar hearing device

About 642 million people around the world need hearing aids, 400 million of them reside in developing countries and only 10 million hearing aids are made each year. Most of the 400 million people cannot afford hearing aids as not only are they expensive to buy but also the maintenance cost of buying batteries for the hearing aids are expensive for them. Therefore they are left in a silent world even when there are devices that exist to aid them. This also prevents them to pursue their dreams, education or be a valuable contributor to their families. They are unable to lead a normal life or provide for themselves, stuck in their lives unable to escape poverty. They have to rely on their families to survive.

Solar Ear is here to change all of these, bring change, break this cycle and help the people that are suffering silently.

According to Solar Ear, the sooner a child is adopted with a hearing aid, the sooner the child can be taught to speak and be able to access the education system and gain opportunities to better their lives. They have come up with a simple but smart solution to help those living in poverty with hearing problems. It is their hearing-impaired employee that invented the first rechargeable hearing device and solar charger for the hearing device. They have been awarded The Tech Award, The World Technology Network Award and Verizon Health Innovation Award. While ordinary batteries last for only 7-10 days, their batteries last for 2 to 3 years, making them cost-effective and eco-friendly. Their hearing-impaired employees travel around the world to share their skills with other deaf people.

5 Hemafuse

In rural regions or developing countries, it is difficult to have access to donor blood in hospitals during medical emergencies. Therefore, there is always a shortage of donor blood and many lives are lost easily. Hemafuse solves this crisis quite impressively.

Hemafuse is an amazing alternative to donate blood. It is a handheld autotransfusion device that can recycle a patient's blood back into the body!

How does it exactly work? When the handle of the Hemafuse is pulled, blood is drawn up through a filter, removing clots or impurities within the blood. Then the handle is pushed down, pushing the filtered blood through the tubing into a blood bag, ready to be transfused back to the patient's body.

It is also inexpensive compared to the normal donor blood bag's cost and very efficient to use.
