So, the 2024 Red Sox season opens today. On March 28th, the season will begin in Seattle with the team playing the Seattle Mariners for a 3-game series.

2024 Red Sox Season Opens Today

Since the team has finished in last place over the last several years; I was hoping the team would make a lot of improvements in the off-season. But, I’m quite disappointed in the lack of signings.

In my opinion, trading Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers clearly showed one of the biggest mistakes Chaim Bloom made. To learn more about that trade; check out my Red Sox Trade Mookie Betts 2020 article. Meanwhile, all the players the Sox acquired in that deal are no longer with the team today.

Like I said in a prior article; you don’t trade dollars for pennies.

When the Red Sox let Chaim Bloom go; I was expecting to see this club sign some prominent Free Agents. However, that hasn’t been the case.

The team hired Craig Breslow as the new Chief Baseball Opeator. In the past, he was a pitcher for the team in 2006 – 2007 and from 2012 – 2016. After he left his career as a player; he was hired by Theo Epstein and worked for the Chicago Cubs as the Director of Strategic Baseball Operations.

Although I have been disappointed in the team over the last several years; this off-season has left a bad taste.

MLB Rule Changes

So, every year, the MLB makes changes. And, this year is no exception. One change that has been made is there has been a widening of the runner’s lane that includes the dirt between the foul line and the infield grass. Also, this rule will help the Umpires evaluate any plays.

In addition, the MLB games will get back some of the time they lost in September 2023.

Moreover, each team only gets four mound visits per game. Last year, teams received 5 mound visits. But, if a team has no mound visits left by the 9th inning; they will be awarded one more visit.

Another rule change for the 2024 season is Umpires will allow defensive players to signal for a mound visit without actually visiting the mound. Indeed, this sounds confusing! Time will tell how this goes once the regular season begins.

2024 Red Sox Season – Team Prediction

With opening day beginning today; I am not optimistic this year’s team will do well. Due to the injuries and several players out for the season; I would predict a last-place finish like the last several years.

In the same way, one of the team’s biggest issues was the pitching. They traded Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves and one of the pitchers they acquired in the off-season is Lucas Giolot is out on injury. with a partially torn ligament. Though he did have surgery recently; he will be out for the entire 2024 season.

Because the team has been in the cellar over the last several years; will some of the newer players make a difference? For instance, will Trevor Story return to form? Since he signed with the Sox; he has spent more time dealing with injuries.

When the off-season started; there was a lot of hope the team would make some additions to their rotation. However, that wasn’t the case. The best signing they may have had was to make Andrew Bailey the new pitching coach. Because Bailey had a lot of success as a pitcher and in his role with the San Francisco Giants over the last four years; will his experience help the team’s pitchers?

Since the team hasn’t had a reliable Ace in several years; will the team finally get a deal with Jordan Montgomery? Another disappointment! the Arizona Diamondbacks inked Montgomery for 25 million for 1 year and an option for a 2nd year yesterday.

2024 Red Sox Season – Will You Be Following the Team

Because I have been an avid fan since the age of 6; I will watch a few games before I decide whether I will follow the team this year. To learn more about my love of the team; check out my Red Sox Fan article.

Although I may catch a few games; the ownership has lost my confidence in doing what’s right for the team. When you have both past and present players asking for more pitchers and nothing is done; the players lose confidence.

Also, for the 2nd year in a row; I don’t plan to go to games in person. So, what does that tell you?
