Why Obi-Wan And Vader’s Encounter In The Upcoming 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series Is Already George Lucas Canon

Since the release of Revenge of the Sith in 2005, I have been proclaiming that the upcoming encounter of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader was actually set up by George Lucas himself, as evidenced by dialogue in Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, and Return of the Jedi. It is essentially already implied G-level canon. Follow me here. It is completely logical, and not even a theory. It is plain as day once you look at the dialogue presented in Lucas’ saga films.

In Return of the Jedi, when Luke reached out to Darth Vader saying, "There is still good in you," Vader responded by telling Luke, "Obi-Wan once thought as you do." We have never seen that. Near the end of Revenge of the Sith, as Padme was dying giving birth to the twins, she proclaimed to Obi-Wan, "There is still good in him [Anakin]." Keep in mind that at this point Obi-Wan thought he had just killed Anakin on Mustafar. He did not want to tell Padme that. He also did not go to Mustafar thinking there was still good in Anakin, nor did he go there to see if there was any good. He was fully convinced Anakin was gone, just as Yoda had told him, “Gone your apprentice is, consumed by Lord Vader.” They learned that Anakin had killed even younglings. Yoda then sent Obi-Wan to kill Anakin. It was an order. There was nothing equivocal about it. Obi-Wan was following an order to go kill Darth Vader, and he was in no way going to see if there was still good in him.

We have never seen Obi-Wan confront Vader to see if there is still good in him. However, in that Return of the Jedi line, Lucas made it clear, “Obi-Wan once thought as you do.” Once. We have never seen that “once” – not yet. However, according to this line, it happened.

In the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, I imagine we will see the moment when Obi-Wan realizes that Darth Vader is not dead. He may possibly see Vader on the HoloNet like in James Luceno’s book Dark Lord - The Rise of Darth Vader. He will be completely shocked to learn that Anakin has somehow survived their duel on Mustafar. A flashback will enter his mind (and shown on our screen) to Padme uttering those very fateful words to him on Polis Massa, “There is still good in him.” This will then somehow lead to his encounter(s) with Vader only to come to the conclusion that there is no good left in Anakin. He will witness Anakin do the worst things we have ever seen Vader do. By the time he speaks with Luke on Dagobah as a Force ghost, he will be fully convinced that Vader is “more machine than man,” and that “the good man who was your father was destroyed.”

We can clearly see that George Lucas set up this encounter between the prequel and original trilogies himself with dialogue that speaks to this across his saga movies. What is fascinating to me is that he lays the final seed in Revenge of the Sith with Padme telling Obi-Wan, “There is still good in him.” In essence, one of the last things Lucas did with Star Wars was to set up a future Star Wars tale. To me, that is George, always proclaiming there will be no more Star Wars, while clandestinely scheming to make more Star Wars! It is funny (because it is true). As Padme planted the seed for Obi-Wan to one day go see if there is still any good in his former apprentice and brother, George planted the seed (at least in my mind) that we would be literally seeing that encounter happen one day, now coming on May 25 to a television screen near you!
