What We Know About The 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series So Far

Let's Refresh

By Culture SlatePublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The much anticipated Disney+ series featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi has started production, and Star Wars fans everywhere have rejoiced. Ever since rumors of Ewan McGregor's much anticipated return began circulating, the Kenobi series has arguably been the most anticipated new show on Disney's streaming service. Devoted fans religiously comb the internet for any hint about the show's content. Even a simple picture of McGregor rocking the "Kenobi beard" has fans dancing with joy. While the debut of Obi-Wan Kenobi is still far off, there is still plenty of information floating about detailing what the show will be about. Let's run down everything we know so far.

Details on who would be on the production crew of the show were some of the first to emerge. Deborah Chow is credited as both director and producer on the show, and from what we've heard, she is in charge on set. This isn't Chow's first foray into the galaxy far, far away as she was responsible for two of the best episodes in the first season of The Mandalorian. "Chapter 3: The Sin" and "Chapter 7: The Reckoning" were some of the finest entries in the premiere season of Disney+ Star Wars content. The introduction of Grogu's little ball, a knob stolen from a control lever onboard the Razor Crest, and the fast paced, up close cinematography of the action sequences make "Chapter 3" a highlight of the first season. Chow also demonstrated a mastery of building suspense and tension in Chapter 7 as Kuill races to reach the Crest with The Child before being blasted by scout troopers.

Ewan McGregor, apart from starring as everybody's favorite Jedi Master, has also been tabbed as executive producer on the show. McGregor has previously produced several miniseries focused on his and his friend Charley Boorman's trips around the world on electric motorcycles. Ewan McGregor has also revealed that they will be using similar technology to The Mandalorian. This most likely indicates a trip into the Volume for the cast and crew.

Prior to the full cast list being announced in the last couple weeks, it was announced that Hayden Christensen would be reprising his role as Darth Vader in the show. This was met with much celebration in the fan community, as the prequels (and specifically Christensen) have enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. While Christensen will almost certainly be inside the Darth Vader suit, as he was while filming Revenge of the Sith, he may also hopefully be portraying a younger Anakin Skywalker in memories, visions, or flashbacks to the Clone Wars.

With the show taking place 10 years after the fall of the Republic, destruction of the Jedi, and the last time we saw Kenobi at the end of Revenge of the Sith, it is highly likely that we will be seeing the Lars homestead. This was almost certainly confirmed with the release of the full cast list on March 29, which included Bonnie Piesse and Joel Edgerton, who formerly played Beru and Own in the prequel trilogy. The characters of the rest of the cast list are less certain. Moses Ingram teased that she plays with lightsabers. Was she simply expressing her Star Wars fandom or giving a hint that she'll be playing an Imperial Inquisitor on the hunt for Kenobi? Indira Varma, most known for her work on Game of Thrones, could be playing the deceased Satine Kryze. If this show is what many fans hope it is - an introspective journey of Kenobi dealing with trauma - it would make sense to have the woman he loved make an appearance. Especially given the personal and grisly nature of her death.

As Obi-Wan Kenobi is arguably the most anticipated Star Wars project currently in the works, there will surely be no shortage of leaks and rumors as the air date approaches. Lucasfilm and Disney both have a long history of keeping things under wraps and doing everything they can to quash spoilers, to the chagrin of some fans. With the highly talented cast and crew that has been assembled to work on the project, combined with the budget and technology of Disney, Star Wars fans are justifiably ravenous for every morsel of information about the show. For now, they will have to be satisfied with The Bad Batch and the slate of other content in the Star Wars universe.
