What Is Truth?

What is true and what is Truth? For these two things are worlds apart.

Can the written word be Truth? Or merely something that might only be true?

That which is written can never be Truth. So how am I to express this to you, the reader? This is my conundrum . . .

I can talk to you about an apple. I can describe how it tastes, how it looks, how it feels in the palm of my hand, and though these things that I tell you may be true, they are absolutely most definitely not Truth.

If I give you an apple and you feel it for yourself, you bite into it and taste it's bittersweet flavour, if you observe the beautiful arrangements of red and green shades that cover its surface and you completely and wholly absorb yourself in the experience of 'being' with this apple, THIS experience is the direct experience of truth. It is undeniably real and therefore can only be considered as Truth.

So what good is all of this?

Don't ask me, I haven't a clue.

But I do know that many people mistake what is true for Truth and in fact, these two are very different things.

I once heard a Mystic talking to a large audience.

He gave a wonderful example of the difference between something that is true and something that is Truth.

He was giving a discourse, explaining to his audience of over 300 people that on the way to the very seminar he was speaking at now, he came face to face with a terrorist as he was just about to enter the arena to speak.

The terrorist was waiting silently at the front door of which he, the mystic, now needed to walk through. The terrorist recognized him and so thought he would most definitely tell the truth since that is the entire life focus of anyone who considers themselves to be a practising Mystic.

With his ear pressed against the door, the terrorist could not hear a single sound coming from the hall within. He did not know that everyone inside was sitting in silent meditation waiting for the Mystic to arrive and begin the discourse.

The Mystic knew that there were 300 people sitting inside, men, women and children, and he knew that the terrorist intended to kill as many people as he possibly could.

While telling the audience this story, the Mystic described the terrorist as wearing a large vest of explosives; he was what we would commonly call a 'suicide bomber'. He spoke to the audience saying that the terrorist turned to him and said, "I can't tell if there is anyone in there or not. Do you know how many people are inside?"

The Mystic then asked his audience, "What do you want me to tell him? 'The Truth or The Untruth?"

As any experienced Mystic knows, one of the deepest and most fundamental truths of our existence is the importance of cherishing life and taking care of each other, for the benefit of not just our species but of all life itself. Without this, not only would our lives be full of hate and misery, but every other living thing would suffer at the cost of our own negligence and disrespect.

So, if there has been any point in writing this at all, I suppose it could be to help people distinguish between the nature of something that may be true but not in accordance with Truth.

To begin to understand the deep and profound nature of Truth, all we have to do is look within. This is the first and most important lesson of Mysticism. How you do that though, is most definitely up to you.

This is the first ever article I have ever written on the 'Vocal Media' Platform. If you would like to read more feel free to let me know, and if there is any way of sending in questions or responses to this, I would be happy to read what you have to say.

Many thanks.
