What A Tease!

“This is the way.”

— Din Djarin (The Mandalorian)

Since its premiere in late 2019, the exclusive Disney+ series The Mandalorian has become a massive hit among Star Wars fans. Set five years after Return of the Jedi, the show features a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Din Djarin, who roams the outskirts of the galaxy collecting bounties on wanted individuals. Early on in the series, Din becomes a caregiver and protector to a mysterious young Force-sensitive alien child, Grogu, who appears to be member of the late Jedi Master Yoda's species. There is still considerable mystery over his origins and how he survived Order 66. He is estimated to be about 50 standard years old. Din is later tasked by a member of his Mandalorian clan with seeking out a Jedi to care for and train Grogu in the ways of the Force. This heavy responsibility puts him in the crosshairs of ex-Imperials, bounty hunters, and other various adversaries throughout the course of the first two seasons of the show. The show concluded its second season this past December with Din completing his primary mission concerning Grogu. He is now set on a path to new adventures in the upcoming season. While the hit show is expected to return in 2022, it has already spun off a series focusing on Boba Fett, another famous bounty hunter in the Star Wars universe.

Of course, the only thing better than watching The Mandalorian is taking the reins and playing the iconic bounty hunter himself. It appears you may be able to live out some of his adventures for yourself. To many people's initial excitement, a footage of an actual Mandalorian video game was recently leaked online. The video in question starts on a title screen that features Grogu before launching into a Battlefront II-esque 3D view of Din, fighting and blasting stormtroopers through the corridors of an Imperial cruiser. There is also footage shown of him scrolling through a menu of equipment, which include flamethrower, grappling hook, and, of course, the iconic "whistling birds" featured in the series. The menu screen shows episodes from season one of the series, meaning that the playable levels are based on each episode from the show. The game seems to be running on the Google Stadia platform, which many developers have noted, is not known for game creation capabilities.

Regrettably, amid growing skepticism as to the authenticity of the video footage, the leaker of this amazing game footage, YouTuber Christopher Turner, has come out and admitted that he staged this amazing "leak" to generate some attention to his four-month "passion project." This was a "modded" Battlefront II game featuring Din Djarin, which was created using Unreal engine. Unfortunately, there is no Mandalorian game officially in development. Despite the disappointment at Turner’s misleading video, many people, myself included, were impressed by the quality of this “leaked” game.

In the meantime, Star Wars fans are still waiting on news of other rumored Star Wars video game projects, such as a rumored sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, as well as an unnamed "open world" Star Wars game from Ubisoft, which I am very interested in. Those impatient for a Mandalorian game may find some relief in knowing that the Star Wars: Squadrons video game has some Mandalorian DLC content, as does Minecraft. More importantly, the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, tentatively scheduled for release next Spring, is rumored to have a DLC add-on that includes actual playable content from the series. If you do not mind your Din and Grogu being a bit "blocky," it will give you at least a taste of a Mandalorian-based video game. As Palpatine would say, the creation of an official Mandalorian video game is something we will be watching “with great interest.”
