Theory: Disney's 'Lightyear' Takes Place In 'Star Wars' Universe

Star Command In A Galaxy Far, Far, Away?

Pixar is no stranger to theories. Almost every movie they have made has some kind of theory surrounding it. Some are simple and clever like Andy’s mom being Jessie’s original owner in Toy Story 2, and some are downright terrifying like any attempt to explain what is going on in the world of Cars.

Perhaps the biggest theory is that all of the Pixar films exist in the same connected universe, but there is a new theory that might serve to, not only expand the Pixar universe but also connect Pixar to another expansive universe. Some fans think that the new Lightyear trailer may suggest that the film could take place in the Star Wars universe.

Astute viewers of the new Lightyear trailer have noticed more than a few things that are eerily similar to places and tools in Star Wars. The space base that is seen in the trailer (which may be an early version of Star Command) bears a strong resemblance to the bases found on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones. Buzz Lightyear’s spaceship also seems to be powered by something that looks a lot like coaxium which was the rare hyper fuel that was found in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The trailer is littered with these “Easter eggs.” Objects that bear a shocking resemblance to hyperspace rings are floating in space during one scene. There is a frame that may suggest Buzz will be using hyperspace to travel, and even the presence of robots that resemble droids have convinced people that this could exist in the Star Wars universe.

The biggest piece of evidence to fans, however, is a scene that shows Buzz hiding with a robot on a planet that looks like it could be the planet Dagobah, which was the planet Yoda exiled himself to. Buzz’s ship also bears a slight resemblance to an X-wing as well. All of these curious coincidences have convinced fans that Lightyear could be connected to Star Wars in some way.

Does this mean that soon we will learn that Boba Fett could hunt Sully from Monsters Inc., or Jedi younglings play with Mr. Potato Heads? Probably not. The theory seems to suggest that Star Wars exists as a film series within the Toy Story universe, and Lightyear is a spin-off of Star Wars about a more primitive planet breaking the barrier of space travel and exploring other worlds. Those worlds would be in the galaxy far, far, away. Some fans have also pointed out the connection of Andy having Buzz Lightyear toys and part of Star Wars success were toys and merchandise. This would also be technically possible to do since Disney owns both Star Wars and Pixar.

Honestly, this theory is a bit farfetched, and I don’t mean the Pokémon. With the trailer giving extremely little away about the story, it is hard to make any prediction on the plot of Lightyear, much less theorize on its potential universal connections. This film is supposed to be about the man who inspired the toy, but it could be a prequel in the Toy Story universe as well as in our own. There are so many unknowns that any rational theory has little to go on. The references in the trailer are probably just references. As I said, Disney owns both Pixar and Star Wars, so Pixar can make all the references they want.

Needless to say, the odds of Lightyear being connected to the Star Wars universe in anything more than references is slim to none. That being said, theories aren’t fun because they are always right, they are fun because they allow fans to combine critical thinking with fandom. Sometimes it is just fun to theorize and make predictions about our favorite things, and sometimes they contain nuggets of truth that can be seen in the film, shows and games we love. That is what makes theories great, so we will have to wait to see if we get any Star Wars connections in Lightyear.
