Introduction

As requested, the 10th article in my astrological compatibility series focuses on the relationship between Aries and Capricorn. It is my fourth article about Aries and my third article about Capricorn. I started this series because relationships are one of my favorite topics: why is it that we gravitate so strongly to some personalities and clash so hard with others? Before you read it, however, there are a couple of things, I'd like you to keep in mind:

1. The article is less about "whether or not" Aries and Capricorn are compatible and more about how the two signs interact 2. When I speak about the signs, I am referring to the archetypes; this article applies just as much to the Moon, Ascendant etc. as it does to the Sun. 3. To accurately assess the "astrological compatibility" between 2 individuals, you need to look at the whole chart; for example, by scheduling a synastry reading with me. & 4. "Compatibility" is about more than romance; this article also applies to friendships, family dynamics etc.

Compatibility Between Aries & Capricorn Placements

Aries and Capricorn make a "square" aspect to each other which means they are 90 degrees apart on the zodiacal wheel. They share neither element nor polarity, but they do share a modality. Generally speaking, square aspects are believed to cause conflict. While the shared modality indicates a similar approach to life, the clashing elements show that they express this approach in different (and sometimes incompatible) ways. In this case, Aries and Capricorn are both cardinal signs. Cardinal signs are the leaders of the zodiac. However, since Aries is a fire sign and Capricorn is an earth sign, the two of them lead in vastly different ways.

Ruled by Mars, Aries is active, energetic and bold. They are hard-working and ambitious but driven by passion. People are often drawn to their confidence and bravery. However, their leadership style can sometimes be a bit harsh and aggressive. In contrast, Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, planet of restriction and discipline. While sharing the ram's ambition, the sign of the goat is more likely to be driven by long-term goals than the immediate pleasures of the moment. These earth signs are planners, admired for their good organizational skills. They are usually respectful of authority and tradition. Aries, on the other hand, tend to be impulsive and willful. These fire signs are known to live by their own rules, laughing in the face of convention. These differences can cause conflict. For example, the spontaneous and fun-loving Aries may grow impatient with Capricorn's rule-bound nature and bored with their rigid routine. Capricorn might, in turn, find Aries a bit too immature for their tastes. They tend to prefer their peace and quiet, so they could get annoyed by Aries lack of restraint and tendency to argue. Despite their differences, both signs are competitive and like to be in control. In times of conflict, neither is likely to compromise or give in.

That said, the similarities shared between these two cardinal signs can lead to a mutual respect...or even a mutual attraction. It is worth noting that both planets share a connection with Mars, planet of action and motivation. While Aries is its home sign, Capricorn is the sign of its fall, which could indicate affinity and understanding, especially since both signs love a challenge. For example, Aries might actually be attracted to Capricorn's stereotypical stuffiness. These feisty fire signs may be tempted by the thought of pushing Capricorn's boundaries. Capricorn might, in turn, get off on the idea of getting the independent Aries to settle down. While it isn't healthy to try to change the other, it can work if both signs want to be challenged. For example, deep down, many Capricorns want to let go and have fun for a change; their measured and reserved nature just makes it hard. On the flip side, many Aries are attracted to discipline and would love to find a person who can provide them with the stability they lack. While both signs are powerful in their own right, they each have their own deficiencies, as well. Aries is courageous and willing to go after what they want no matter the stakes, but their lack of discipline makes it hard to follow through in the long term. In contrast, Capricorn has the organizational skills needed to be an effective leader but they have too many inhibitions to actually move forward with their plans in the way that they want. Both signs are powerful in their own right, which could cause friction, but together, they can become a power couple.
