'The Mandalorian' Season 3: Moff Gideon Actor Teases Return Of This "Big Brained" Character

Season 3 Cannot Come Soon Enough!

Despite the absolute all-out success of The Mandalorian, news always seems to be a bit scarce in terms of what we can expect from the show's future. With all the upcoming Star Wars content, I suppose it is somewhat understandable. Thankfully, we have Giancarlo Esposito dropping little pieces of information wherever and whenever he can.

Details of almost all upcoming Star Wars shows are always kept well and truly under wraps, but Esposito has teased the return of his character Moff Gideon in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, which is currently in production. Whilst no details have been confirmed, it does make sense for the character to return in the highly anticipated Season 3.

**SPOILER WARNING** Gideon faces a little bit of a crisis in the Season 2 finale. Despite seemingly holding all the cards, including the Darksaber, things don't go his way when an old legend appears in the form of Luke Skywalker. Mowing Gideon's legion of Dark troopers down like they are nothing, Gideon is obviously overcome with fear and also loses the Darksaber. With the amount of emphasis put on it, there's a good chance the Darksaber's ownership issues will continue into the third season. With Gideon being left alive in the season 2 finale, even though he did try to take his own life at the sight of a Jedi, he will no doubt be looking for some revenge and to try and reclaim the weapon for himself again.

It's also worth noting, based on when the series is set (around five years after Return of the Jedi), Gideon is one of few remaining warlords still clinging onto the now decimated Empire. With his position, he will no doubt have a plethora of knowledge the New Republic would find very useful. Esposito himself has stated his character has a "big brain" and likely has contingencies in place in the event of his capture. This means it's highly unlikely he would stay imprisoned for long, and a breakout could be in the cards in the first few episodes.

It's also highly unlikely he will go after Grogu (Baby Yoda) again, with him going away Luke. But he now has a personal grudge against Din Djarin, along with a desire to reclaim the weapon he embarrassingly lost at the end of season 2 and continue to cause trouble for Mandalore. As fans know, the wielder of the Darksaber has the right to rule Mandalore, but now it rests in the hands of someone not interested in accepting this burden, so it's a safe bet this will form a good part of the plot for Season 3, making the Moff's return a no brainer and completely in line with the story.

In an interview with Variety, Esposito had this to say:

"I have to imagine you would [see Gideon return]. I can't speak for Lucasfilm, but I know I have desire."

He also added:

"I think we need to see Moff to continue the story, and to continue the pressure and edge that someone with the big brain that Moff has thinks about."

As with any project like this, there are never any definites. However, the actor also gave somewhat of a "guarantee" he would be returning. Interestingly, Esposito is also the one who confirmed a season 4 is planned, so this suggests his character may not just be returning for a third outing, but a fourth as well as it's unlikely he would know this information unless his character is involved. Hopefully we won't have long to wait until Season 3 is on our screens, but until then, we will continue to bring you updates as and when they happen.

Until next time!
