Who Taught This Great Jedi and Sith?

There are many Sith Lords in history who captured the imagination of Star Wars fans alike, namely Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, and Darth Maul from the Star Wars films. One particular Dark Lord of the Sith, who was not a Lucas creation, has captivated us. While he originated in a videogame, his staying power was so great that he is still remembered to this day. That Sith was Darth Revan, a legend in the time of the Old Republic. But the question here is who trained Revan? Who taught him his ways? Who shaped and influenced him when he was still a Jedi? Well the irony was that his teacher also became a fellow Sith. That person was Darth Traya, or as she was once known, Kreia.

Kreia's story begins with Revan’s, teaching him in the ways of the Jedi. Long had she forsaken her eyesight and taught her students more in mental skills. She used her spare time to learn more about the deeper mysteries of the Force. Of course, she worried for Revan, who was always a bit of a rebel who went against the wishes of the council. She did not join him when he went off on his crusade against the Mandalorians in the Mandalorian Wars. She also held back when Revan and his new Sith empire tried to take over the Republic. It was only after this war did Kreia begin to emerge once again.

One of Kreia’s more interesting traits was her hatred toward the Force. She hated the fact that it appeared to have a will of its own. She hated the idea that free will itself was being challenged by the Force, and that it held the destiny of everyone. When looking into the events of the Mandalorian Wars, she discovered that a weapon was activated on Malachor IV by Revan, leaving a great wound in the Force. If something like the Force could be wounded, then it could be killed. Determined to bring an end to the Force itself, she went to Malachor and established her own Sith faction. Thus, she became the Sith Lord Darth Traya.

During this time, two Sith Lords came to her, Darth Nihilus, the Lord of Hunger, and Darth Sion, the Lord of Pain. Together the three of them formed the Sith Triumvirate with the plan of destroying the Force itself. As time passed, the two Sith Lords’ goals soon deviated from Traya’s. Of course, as it was the Sith nature, their alliance was broken up by betrayal with Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion turning against Darth Traya. She was stripped of the Force and exiled. She became Kreia again, at least for a time.

She would later meet someone who could help her in her dream of destroying the Force, the Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik. Kreia formed a Force bond with Meetra in hopes of creating a great wound in the Force that would echo forever throughout the universe. Together the two took on the remnants of the Sith Empire that had almost purged the Jedi. When Kreia showed her true Sith nature, Meetra managed to stop her. Before dying, Kreia told Meetra of the future of the galaxy and sent her to follow Revan, who was busy fighting the true Sith Empire deep in the Unknown Regions.

For many fans, Kreia is an interesting character because of her philosophy, and her unique view of the Force. She did not see the Force as light or dark, good or evil, but simply as an entity that yearns to control and dominate others. Despite being a Darksider she did not wish to control the Force, but destroy it. Perhaps, in some ways, she was fighting for free will in its purest form. However, her methods of going about it were very dark. Kreia was many things. She was a Jedi, a teacher, and a Sith.
