The Flat Earth Conspiracy and The People That Keep It Going

Are all Flat Earthers liars?

I have a guilty little secret that I have been hiding from those closest to me for years and I think it's about time I let it out. I love the flat earth, in fact, I am well and truly addicted. No, I am not a flat earther. I do not believe we are living on a pizza shaped planet covered with a glass dome that no one has ever seen or measured. What I'm addicted to is the idea itself and the characters that put themselves out there to defend it.

For those that don't believe me when I say there are people that believe the earth is flat and spend their time debating the fact, try looking up Nathan Thompson who is a man that got arrested for shouting, “The Earth is Flat, You're Being Lied To,” at primary school children during school time. Or the self proclaimed Facebook famous Joey Rocha who also believes that volcanoes are fake, despite living in Hawaii. Then of course there is the one and only Sleeping “Anthony Riley” Warrior who calls himself a lawyer and once threatened to sue the UK for not teaching flat earth as an alternative theory.

However, after sitting through hundreds and hundreds of flat earth debates, videos and lectures I am starting to question whether any of these people actually believe the things they spout.

Anybody that has seen the Netflix documentary 'Behind The Curve', will know what I am talking about. This was the coming out of flat earth activist and founder of the YouTube channel Globebusters, Bob Super Noodle Doodle Knodel, who managed to get his hands on ring laser gyroscope for the occasion. I am not a scientist but from my basic understanding of gyroscopes, they are extremely accurate devices made to measure the movement of the object they are attached to. So if it is sitting on the earth it will measure if the earth is moving.

During the movie, Bob Super Noodle Doodle Knodel said that this wasn't the case and that his $20,000 supremely accurate ring laser gyroscope would in fact not measure any movement of the earth when turned on and thus prove his frisbee theory. However, in what was surely a kick in the nuts to his reputation a 15 degree per hour drift was measured. A measurement that you would expect to see on a rotating earth.

Despite this finding and initially admitting that this would prove the rotation of the earth Bob quickly dismissed it and moved on as if nothing had happened. In fact, he moved on to paying for a mechanical gyroscope to be built from scratch so that he could conduct the very same test. His second experiment also failed and he is currently on a mission to block all videos that mention it on YouTube after the same 15 degree per hour drift was measured, thanks Bob.

My issue is that this seems to be an ongoing thing for so called believers in flat earth. They say they are looking for the truth only to dismiss any evidence against their pancake world narrative.

For example, all photographs from space are fake. Video footage of the International Space Station and it's astronauts is CGI. Measurements made by land surveyors are wrong and things simply do not disappear behind the horizon because that is just perspective.

So what is it? Why do they put themselves in the firing line of debates and constant ridicule from the king of flat earth debunkers, Fight The Flat Earth?

We can call them stupid or uneducated, but when you watch the way they worm through debates dodging, ducking, diving and doing more dodging you realise that it actually takes some intelligence. Nah, for me they aren't stupid at all, they know the earth isn't flat they just love to argue the unwinnable argument. They scour the world for one tiny bit of evidence that could be associated with their belief system and use misunderstood science to ram it down your throat hoping beyond hope that someone will believe them and some attention will be thrown their way.

Unfortunately, some people do buy into it and even donate money to help with their cause. They are snake oil salesmen, selling the false promise of knowledge and an understanding of the world that is only for the open minded or the privileged few. If you agree with them you are made to feel special, made to feel like you belong to a small tight knit group of people who understand the matrix and how to escape. In other words, they liars and fraudsters looking to be worshipped, which is surprising for a group of people that generally describe themselves as devout Christians and will surely not end well when their judgment day finally arrives.
