With the success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last December and The Last Jedi due out later this year, Disney and Lucasfilm are undoubtedly expanding the galaxy far, far away in fresh and exiting new directions. As we’ve seen with the cast of the Han Solo movie, the studio is keen to recruit actors and actresses with whom the Force — ahem, I mean talent — is strong. After having recently watched Her and Ex Machina - two brilliant but also very different movies on artificial intelligence (AI), the subject has wondered around my mind for the past few days. And since Star Wars is almost always somewhere at the back of my mind, it was only a matter of time until the two subjects met and I started thinking about artificial intelligence in Star Wars - Droids.

To be completely fair, I have not been that pumped up about the upcoming young Han Solo movie as the next Star Wars spin-off. Not to give a wrong vibe here, since Han Solo is one of my favourite movie characters and I see no reason why this movie hasn't got the potential to be awesome. But there are also some potential problems that are likely to come along with the spin-off of young Han Solo, that have caused me to curb my enthusiasm.

“Don’t get excited!” In the midst of their flirtatious quarreling in The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo fires this line at Princess Leia — but honestly, we’re finding it very hard to take his advice right now. We may have less than a year to go until The Last Jedi hits our theaters, but its plot is as shrouded in secrecy as the dark side itself. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still a month and a half away, but it's the perfect filler to wedge between two bombastic episodic installments. The smaller scale story is the best way to let audiences recover from space lasers and magic knights, and nothing says smaller-scale like a plot driven by its characters. Speaking of characters, #RogueOne looks to have some of the most interesting humans, aliens, and of course, droids in the #StarWars universe.
