Plato (428-348 BCE) is giant of Western Philosophy, whose words cast a long shadow to the present day, where the study of ethics, ontology, justice, metaphysics and many more fields begin with a chapter on him. His work has shaped the mind of many generations of great thinkers who, in turn, either built upon or criticised his words, but never ignored him. However, these great thinkers have typically fallen into very narrow categories of people, making the study of Plato almost exclusively a pastime for the privileged. This has changed with the invention of the internet, which allows me, some random guy, to read Plato on the toilet, on my phone, when I am meant to be doing my job.

Photography is an everyday habit now, with our phones being an extension of ourselves and the camera app being an extra set of eyes. We don’t just take photos to capture a beautiful moment. We snap photos to remember confirmation numbers, parking sign details, or even an interesting book we want to look up later. Not things we need to remember forever, but they’ll still get backed up to the cloud, just in case.

Enshitification is a process by which the quality of a service or product gradually decays as a result of shifting business interests and values. A business may begin by optimizing their products for their users/customers. The first phase of enshitification is when they shift from a consumer-forward mentality to optimizing the product for business partners such as advertisers or add-ons. From there, it is just a matter of time before the business begins maximizing for short-term profits by cutting support for the product, firing personnel, increasing subscription costs while inundating users with targeted ads, etc.

As a child, there was no thing cooler than the little phones that slid or flipped or folded. Texting on tiny buttons and shortening words to make it easier. Navigating a small screen to use just a few apps. You can text your mom to pick you up early from school, you can spend the night with a friend without your parent losing access to you, you can call and coordinate outfits with your best friend.
