Write And Chill
If my iPhone froze, here's what would I do...
I imagine if my iPhone stopped working, or pretty much everything froze, like the world was on pause, with no warning, no breaking news announcement, no emergency broadcast telling people to prepare themselves. It was just another ordinary morning. People woke up, reached for their phones, checked their notifications, scrolled through social media, responded to messages, and continued with their daily routines. No calls. No text messages. No social media. No internet. No GPS. Nothing.
People tapped their screens, pressed buttons, restarted their devices, and even shook their phones as if that would somehow bring them back to life.
It didn't.
For the first time in a very long time, billions of people were disconnected.
And they had absolutely no idea what to do with themselves.
IF IT HAPPENS, I DON'T THINK I EVEN CARE; I WOULD JUST WRITE & CHILL
WHAT DO I MEAN BY THAT????
I would just take the time to lie down and pretend that I am on vacation, close my eyes, and think about my plans and ideas, whether it's something to write for a dialogue for my play or an essay that I want to express for my readers. For me, writing is more than putting words on paper. It is a way of expressing myself, exploring ideas, and bringing the stories in my imagination to life. My journey as a writer began when I was younger, and over time, writing became something I wanted to continue pursuing. As a playwright, I have learned that stories can take you places you have never been and introduce you to people who exist only in your imagination until you give them a voice. My goal is for this to become more than an essay about a writer who likes to relax. I want it to reflect your life as a creative person, your relationship with your craft, and the importance of making room for yourself outside your ambitions, even without technology or Wi-Fi/internet.
When I'm not thinking about what to write, I just chill and think of ways to entertain myself. For instance, I am a bookworm; I would read books again like I used to. I sometimes read on a Kindle; however, I prefer reading a physical book. I would read my favorite books I used to read and couldn't care less that I had read them numerous times. I have always thought of stories as films or TV shows in my head, rather than watching Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+. I have two of my favorite books that I love to read again: The Skin I'm In by Sharon G. Flake and Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer. The Skin I'm In is an inspiring story that is relatable for me as a dark-skinned person, and Hope Was Here is a book I read when I was 12, and I fell in love with Hope and Eddie's chemistry; it made me fall in love with the book over and over again.
If that doesn't work out, I have my old iPod Touch and listen to music that I haven't listened to in a while before I graduated high school. I used to have an iPod, and I would listen to my music while walking in the hallways, even though my then-boyfriend would take it.
I'M NOT GOING TO LIE, I DO MISS UPLOADING MUSIC IN MY ITUNES!
Unlike streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, physical media still exists. I have a library of DVDs and some VHS tapes I can pop one in my old DVD player and try to watch some movies to distract me from my boredom. After all, it is a relief from no longer watching ads and not missing a thing; after all, you can go back and watch what you missed without worrying about the internet.
The funny thing was that people had spent years complaining about how much time they wasted on their phones. They complained about people being glued to their screens, families sitting together without speaking, and friends who would rather text than pick up the telephone.
Now that the phones were gone, nobody seemed to know how to live without them.
Apparently, being disconnected wasn't as easy as everyone thought.
Honestly, it may seem like the end of the world, but it isn't.
