Sung Kang Talks About Obi-Wan Series

A Possible Hint

Not much is known about the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. While we have a list of confirmed cast, we do not really know the specific roles they will be portraying beyond Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Even though we know that Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker in the series, it is not clear whether he will be playing the brash young Jedi in a flashback scene, or as the post-Mustafar Darth Vader. Recently leaked concept arts had teased a little more detail about how Anakin/Darth Vader may appear in the series. A few days ago, we found out a little bit more about another character in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Joining big names like Moses Ingram, Kumail Naniani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O'Shea Jackson, Jr. Simone Kessel, Benny Safdie, and Maya Erskine, we have Sung Kang, known for his role as Han Lue in the Fast and the Furious franchise. This has been a childhood dream come true for him. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Kang discussed his love for the Star Wars fandom. As he reminisced about his childhood, he slipped a key detail about his role in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I used to dress up in the cheap K-mart plastic Halloween costumes, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, almost every single day from 8 to 13 years old. My friends and I would play pretend, we would make our own lightsabers out of toilet paper centers and stuff like that and paper towel cardboard, and to be able to be on set and see Darth Vader and see the Star Wars Universe in front of me, I mean -- just as a fan to be able to be part of that history is pretty amazing. I kept pinching myself to go, 'How did I end up here?' and, my character has a lightsaber, to go, 'What? This is.. It's not a toy. It's actually the real thing, right?' so pretty cool.”

As we laughed along with the mental image of young Kang playing with toilet paper roll lightsabers, we might have missed a key detail in the interview. It appears Han will be wielding a lightsaber (like how Han Solo had used Luke’s lightsaber in The Empire Strikes Back). While this simple comment answers one question, it raises many more. What kind of character will Kang be playing? Knowing that his character is wielding a lightsaber narrows down the possibilities. We know that he is probably not an Imperial officer or a stormtrooper. We know that he is probably not a bounty hunter. There are not a lot of people in the decade after Order 66 and the events of Revenge of the Sith who would be using a lightsaber. Kang may be a surviving Jedi, or perhaps a villain.

Some had speculated that Kang could be playing an Inquisitor, Darth Vader’s agents who were tasked with hunting down any Jedi in the aftermath of Order 66. There was also a rumor that he could be playing the Fifth Brother from Star Wars Rebels. However, this is highly unlikely as the character was a recurring antagonist in the series, and SPOILER ALERT perished in the Season 2 finale. If Kang was indeed the Fifth Brother, then he would have had to encounter Obi-Wan on a different planet other than Tatooine in order to fit in with the established canon. After all, he would have reported Obi-Wan’s location to Darth Vader, and we knew Obi-Wan would not let information about his location leak out to the Empire so easily. On the other hand, Darth Vader has many Imperial Inquisitors reporting to him. Kang could easily be a new Inquisitor outside the ten shown in comics and onscreen.

There is also a third possibility for Kang’s character. He may be a Jedi who survived Order 66, fell to the Dark Side, but did not join the Empire. This is similar to Taron Malicos from the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. If Kang had mentioned the color of his character’s lightsaber, it would have further narrowed down the possible roles.

Filming for Obi-Wan Kenobi has reportedly finished. However, the Disney+ show will probably be released sometime in 2022.
