Silver Tide

In the depths of the clear ocean waters was a kingdom with a mer-society or merpeople. This kingdom is called Myrfynia, which was only one of the many underwater kingdoms. Near the bottom of the ocean was a merman swimming alongside a school of fishes and a crab crawling on the floor. The young merman’s name was Silver Tide, who was always a bit too sarcastic and quick with a short temper. He wasn’t related to anyone important merpeople and lived his life with much fun as possible.

Raising his head he noticed a shadow, and approaching kind of quickly. “A ship?” his blue eyes shined as he stared in wonder.

It was against the law for sirens to interact with humans and to enforce the law: if a mermaid or merman is caught interacting with a human they will be stripped of their “song” also known as “song of lure.” There were many with mixed feelings about interacting within the mer-society interacting with their two legged kin. Some felt they should be able to talk with humans and learn from them while others have a great mistrust and took the law seriously. However, Silver enjoys mingling among humans even goes so far to walk on land. He is careful though not to be seen since he doesn’t want to lose his song because once a siren’s song is removed so is their tail. He may like talking with humans but he didn’t want to be stuck as one. Certain mer officers had the power to do this along with the king of each kingdom and the respective royal families.

Silver was about to let the ship pass by when he saw something had fell in the water. It was writhing about and he quickly swam toward them once he realized it was a human. He reached his arms out to the human, catching them gently, cradled them easily so he could press his ear to their chest. Listening for a heartbeat, he could hear one, faint but it was still there and that was enough to hurry to the surface. There was another splash, though concerned with the human in his hands he ignored until he broke through the water, and wondered if another human had fell in.

“Over there!” a person yelled over the ship and pointing at Silver.

“It’s okay,” swimming closer to the edge of the ship where they threw a rope around the unconscious person. “You should try to be more careful.”

The man stared puzzled at Silver. “What are you doing way out here? Are you stranded man?”

Silver gave a smirk, turned around and dove under the water with a splash showing off his blue tail. He chuckles turning to look up at the man who was in complete shock of what he just saw. “It never gets old...”

“Sil!” a voice behind him yelled. “What do you think you are doing?”

Silver cringed at the sound of the mer officer’s voice. “Um, I was just playing a trick on the human,” he mumbled rubbing the back of his head and averted his eyes away.

Without a word the mer officer pulled out a silver shell pendant with a purple gem in the center and held it in their hand finally making eye contact with Silver again. “I saw you save that human. You know it’s forbidden to rescue them Sil..” shaking his head, “You leave me with no choice but to take your ‘song of lure.’” Raising his hand, the gem began to glow and soft purple aura began to surround Silver’s entire body. Instantly his singing voice could be heard as it was pulled from him and quickly his tail was split in two. The other merman looked up when he heard a splash.

Silver grabbed at his throat as his gills were now gone and he began to choke on the water. All of a sudden, Silver was grabbed by a human who he was talking to before on the ship and was being brought to the surface to save him from drowning.
