See Sabastian Stan Suit Up As Luke Skywalker For 'Mandalorian' Season 3 Art

Could The MCU Actor Be Our Next Skywalker?

The last Jedi made his return to Star Wars in dramatic fashion during the Mandalorian Season 2 finale, slicing his way through a hoard of Dark Troopers straight back into our hearts. However, when the hood came down and fans saw a de-aged Mark Hamill, it seemed like there was a disturbance in the Force. Many had wished for Disney to simply recast the role, akin to Alden Ehrenreich portraying a younger Han Solo, rather than using their technology to create a face that, while clearly Mark Hamill and a technical marvel, felt slightly...Off. So, if they had re-cast Luke for the Mandalorian, who would it have been? The Star Wars fandom seems to have made the unanimous decision, something extremely rare in a galaxy far, far away, that it should be none other than Sebastian Stan.

Which brings us to the amazing piece created by digital artist ApexForm. The art was first published in 2019, which shows just how long the desire to have Stan wield Luke's familiar green lightsaber has been around. Sebastian Stan’s role as Bucky in the MCU has given him a tremendous amount of clout in nerd spaces, but even that doesn’t fully explain the sheer volume of support for him as Luke, a character fans are extremely picky about. Just mentioning Luke Skywalker to a Star Wars fan will incite a host of different emotions, and depending on the person, not all of them are pleasant. Yet when it comes to Stan and Luke, everyone seems to get along. Perhaps it’s as simple as the pair just sharing an uncanny resemblance, something both Hamill and Stan have recognized themselves.

Hamill tweeted the now infamous; “Sorry to disappoint you but I refuse to say "Sebastian Stan-I AM YOUR FATHER!" (even though, in fact, I am) #SorryNotSorry #MySonSebastian", in 2017, and continuing to make father son jokes with the younger act. On Stan’s end, while being just as good humored as Hamill, he has been more serious with the possibility of taking on the role if the opportunity came. Speaking on a panel at Rhode Island Comic Con, Stan said "I just want to say here that anytime anyone would like to call me and ask me about Luke Skywalker, I'd be very happy [to play him]," The question is one that seems to follow the actor wherever he goes, Stan going into greater depth once again on Good Morning America "If Mark Hamill called me, personally, to tell me he feels inclined to share this role with me, then I will believe it. Until then, I won't believe it,"

Despite the increasing chances of Stan and Skywalker becoming one and the same, there is an elephant in the room. If they were going to re-cast Luke, surely they would have used the Mandalorian to debut the new actor? This holds a lot of weight, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the dreams of a non-CGI Luke are entirely dashed. From a practical perspective, Luke is going to need to appear in more Star Wars material eventually, and what worked once for one specific scene in The Mandalorian won’t be viable every single time he needs to appear. Disney, and the team at Lucasfilm know this, and have likely already begun planning any future appearances from the son of Vader. It might be better to view the de-aged Hamill as a tribute to the great actor, that allowed him one final bow as the "action hero Luke" he clearly wished to portray, so that next time, they can pass the torch without any regrets. If the Force wills Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill and Sebastian Stan together, then eventually, we will see something come to fruition. In the meantime, at least the fan art kicks ass.
