Rise of Skywalker

A More Fitting End

Spoiler Alert for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.

The movie reveals the Emperor Palpatine has been alive this whole time pulling strings from behind the scenes. He wants Kylo Ren to kill Rey and take command of a new sith fleet called the Final Order.

Instead, with the help of Leia, Kylo returns to the light side of the force and once again becomes Ben Solo, as Rey races to face off against the Emperor with the rebellion right behind her to destroy the sith fleet. It’s revealed that Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter and he wants her to kill him, become the sith empress and take command of the new fleet. Rey declines and with the help of Ben solo, they kill the emperor. The rebellion gets up from some late arrivals and together they destroy the new fleet ending the war. Ben Solo dies after the fight, Rey goes to Luke’s old home on Tatooine and buried Luke and Leia’s lightsabers before revealing her new yellow lightsaber and the movie/saga ends.

While I didn’t hate this ending, there’s one slight change I would’ve made that I think fits better with the theme of the saga. That theme was bringing balance to the force.

If Rey would’ve instead killed the emperor with Ben Solo’s help and the rebel reinforcements never showed up, the rebels would’ve been killed off, the final order would’ve been her’s to command and she could have broken them up. Thus ending the war on both sides and bringing a balance to the galaxy. Rey could’ve still gone and buried the lightsabers but Ben Solo could’ve gone with and either started rebuilding the house or continued with Rey on her journey.

Having balance brought to the galaxy in this way I’ll admit might have angered some fans with it not being the super happy ending we got but I think it’s a more complete ending since since the Phantom Menace Anakin was prophesied to bring the force to balance, the prophecy would’ve been complete with still some hope out there for a brighter future. Darth Vader supposedly brought balance to the force with killing the emperor at the end of Return of the Jedi but if that was the case there wouldn’t have been another war and the emperor wouldn’t have come back.

This change takes Lando Calrissian and makes his part of the story pointless as Lando and Chewy were the two sent to the core planets to bring reinforcements to the battle. If they failed like I wrote above, it shows that the galaxy’s population as lost faith in the rebellion and is sick of the non stop wars. First the clone wars, then the rebellion against the empire and finally a rebellion against the first order. The population is tired of the fighting. It spares Lando and Chewy from dying with the rest of the rebellion and let’s them be apart of the new future along with Ben and Rey.

Besides this small change to the end of the movie, I would have just left everything how it is. I didn’t love everything else but I was okay with it. Rey and Kylo being able to communicate acrosss the galaxy didn’t make sense though sense in the Last Jedi it was set up that Snoke was the one that let them do that with his force abilities but that should have ended with his death in the Last Jedi. That’s my one big complaint for the movie.

Thank you for reading and come back for more.
