Star Wars: The Clone Wars birthed many new and interesting characters over its seven-year run, primarily due to the creative teams, led by George Lucas and Dave Filoni. Each of these new characters, like Hondo Ohnaka, Ahsoka Tano, Master Sinube, Asajj Ventress, and Cad Bane, went on to appear in other stories and media. But only two have earned their own streaming series. Ahsoka will begin streaming on Disney+ late in 2022. Also, according to recent reports, Bo-Katan will be joining Ahsoka with her own series with actress Katie Sackoff reprising her leading role.

Sackoff returned as Bo-Katan Kryze in three episodes of The Mandalorian Season 2 after lending her voice to the animated character, beginning in The Clone Wars for several episodes then later in Star Wars Rebels. The series featuring the former member of Death Watch is set to take place after The Mandalorian Season 3. However, these reports have yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Despite the lack of confirmation, actress Ming-Na Wen, who played Fennec Shand alongside Sackoff in The Mandalorian, expressed her excitement over the news on Twitter but quickly deleted the tweet. The deletion could be taken as confirmation of the report or because it has not been made official yet. Either way, fans will have to wait for an official announcement to really celebrate.

If the news is accurate, there are plenty of stories to tell. Before reappearing in The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan was last seen in Star Wars Rebels, receiving the Darksaber from fellow Mandalorian, Sabine Wren. By the time of her appearance in The Mandalorian, approximately a decade later, Bo-Katan is sans Darksaber and hunting for its current wielder, Moff Gideon. Din Djarin, aka the Mandalorian, wins the Darksaber from Gideon, but to get it from Djarin, Bo-Katan must wrest it from him in a duel. Honor and tradition and all that!

Sackoff is one of the few voice actors who plays the same character in live-action and in animation. Recently, Sackoff expressed her interest in returning in the role;

“The way that Lucasfilm left me in Season 2, one of the roads that could be gone down — absolutely, you’d think — would be the unfinished business. But that is so far above my pay grade, and you just don’t know, right? As a fan of the show, I’m just excited to see what they come up with.”

Reinforcing the idea of the alleged Bo-Katan series, Dave Filoni has spoken to Sackoff about Bo-Katan’s future, with Sackoff describing that conversation;

“Dave and I talk a lot about Bo and her backstory and time lost and things like that, just because we enjoy talking about 'Star Wars' and the characters, I definitely know a lot about who she is and where she’s been and what’s happened. So, yeah, I knew that kind of stuff for sure.”

The Darksaber is a vital part of Mandalorian heritage going back millennia. Having possession of the Darksaber means control of that heritage and upholding the traditions of Mandalore. A Mandalorian named Tarre Vizsla forged the Darksaber, which is unique because of its glowing black blade. Tarre Vizsla was the first Mandalorian inducted into the Jedi Order. As mentioned in Star Wars Rebels, after Vizsla’s death, the Darksaber was kept in the Jedi Temple but was stolen by House Vizsla during a conflict with the Jedi and has since been passed down to generations, eventually falling into the hands of Pre Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch and a mentor for Bo-Katan.

After the former Sith, Maul, returned from the dead, he took possession of the Darksaber after killing Pre Vizsla in battle. Maul kept the Darksaber on Dathomir, where Sabine Wren found it. After defeating her internal struggles and Gar Saxon, Wren kept possession of it until she convinced Bo-Katan to accept the blade. Unfortunately, Bo-Katan lost the blade during the Great Purge of Mandalore, but has vowed to regain possession.

After The Rangers of the New Republic was canceled, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated that some elements of Rangers will get spread out over other series, so the Bo-Katan series could benefit. One thing’s for sure, the period shortly after Return of the Jedi is filling up fast!
