My zodiac and me:

Capricorn edition

Along with most millennials and gen z-ers astrology is a part of life . Whether you are a die hard believer or not, most people tend to refer to astrology in a multitude of ways. For example, when you meet someone new usually one of the first questions asked is “what’s your sign?”. But how many of us actually think astrology truly has an affect on our lives or relationships ? And for those who take things further and dive into zodiac houses and birth charts, is this something truly to be believed?

Before I get to my take on this, let’s start with the basics. Everybody on Earth whether you’re into astrology or not, has a zodiac sign. My sign is Capricorn. I’ve know this since I was about 12/13 years old. The Capricorn is known as the Goat. We all know what it means to be the GOAT (the greatest of all time) and that’s how I jokingly addressed myself when referring to my sign. In retrospect, I really didn’t know anything about my sign other than that. A few years later I get into magazines and BOOM!, there’s zodiac readings in almost every one. Being older and with more sense of self (so I thought around 16 years old) the things I was reading about my zodiac sign just didn’t fit. My mom once told me that I was supposed to be born in early December, which would have made me a Sagittarius, yet I held out until January. I remember swearing that I was meant to be a Sag. They are more fiery and matched the rebellious teenage nature I had. Capricorn’s are Earth signs so naturally they are more grounded people. I surely wasn’t. Capricorn traits are said to be disciplined, incredibly dependant, sensitive, persistent, practical with accountability being at the top of the list. This couldn’t have been further from the selfish person I once was. As with most things though, there are two sides. The other side of a Capricorn is the pessimistic, stubborn old goat. That is where I finally found my first similarity of traits in my sign.

Now at 30 years old it’s safe to say I am not that same person I was at 16. So now what do I have in common with my sign? Well for starters 2019’s Covid pandemic lead me to look deeper into myself than I ever had. The pandemic allowed me and my family of 7 (step dad, mom, and 5 siblings) to quarantine together. The fun times we shared were quickly shadowed by deep things being stirred up from the back of my mind . Have you ever been in a situation where something triggered you in an emotional way but you had no idea where it came from? I personally have experienced this more than I care to admit. This was me and I’m sure a lot of other people about midway into the pandemic. Being that I was with my family that I love so much I didn’t want to be a ticking time bomb around them. From all the challenges life threw at me and sadness/depressions I’ve experienced that I thought I overcame , all the time spent inside during the pandemic started to shine a light on the dark things that my fast paced life had allowed me to ignore . Diving into self help empowering books and following positive Instagram pages for my inner healing I was somehow lead right back to astrology. Now after getting to know myself and all the complexities to my personality along with my growth process I can fully understand and relate to the traits of my zodiac sign. I am as complex as my sign is.

Being that I now finally feel like the Capricorn I am, I realize there is so much more to astrology than we often realize. Yes the majority of us all know our sign, but do you know the house it’s in? All zodiacs have a house they reside in. Knowing your birth chart which includes exact time and location of your birth to calculate the house that rules your sign is one thing. To understand your zodiac house and the other 11 is a lot more confusing than a simple birth chart reading. I still haven’t fully grasped all this but I see that there’s more to astrology than I ever knew. If you simplify everything we are all beings floating in the universe along side planets that switch positions constantly. We love to talk about planets in retrograde and acknowledge the affect it has on our life or emotions (whether we’re joking or not). From what I understand birth charts and the zodiac houses just help shine light on situations that may occur at a period in life when a planet is in a certain position. If we acknowledge a planet’s retrograde (a planet appearing to move backwards in orbit that is said to affect energy, emotions, and even life in general) in a realistic way, I’m starting to think maybe there is some reality to birth charts. How can we not be affected by certain positions of these planets, the energy they have, and the energy they project if we co-exist with them.

I have a step sister whose birthday is one day before mine. We are 6 years and one day apart making us both Capricorns. We couldn’t be more different people but with a better understanding of our zodiac signs and selves, we personally see that our only similarities are those we share within our sign. We have both gone through hardships and the pessemistic nature in us took us to dark places. But the hardworking and persistent Capricorn in us lead us to the light every single time. We are both practical and ambitious workaholics that can let our pessimism get out of hand sometimes, but we’re human! I understand every complicated bit of who we are and have a better way of navigating our complexities in a positive light. The bond we share through our similar natures has deepened our love and bond in life. So is there something to astrology and our zodiac signs or is it just coincidence? I believe if you’re open to it, it can be a guide in life and to who your are if you allow it to be.
