My Review of "Moonfall"

There are some fun concepts to this movie but you really have to shut your mind off while watching.

Moonfall is a science fiction movie that came out in 2022. I am a sucker for disaster movies and I haven't seen one for quite some time. This movie looked like it had all the disaster movie tropes that I was looking for. Excited to see this movie I came out of it with mixed emotions.

It all starts out in space, I guess that only makes sense. There's three astronauts working on fixing something when all of a sudden there's this horrible accident. Not a lot of information is actually given out in this first part of the movie but at least we meet our two protagonists.

First there's Brian who is one of the three astronauts up in space when the accident happened. He's trying to report the truth of what had happened because he was the only one that was conscious when it happened. Unfortunately for him, no one believed him and he was labeled a madman even though he saved himself and a fellow astronaut from certain death.

That other astronaut is Jocinda. She's the other main character in this story. The huge accident had knocked her out so she wasn't conscious when all of it happened. She goes by whatever theory NASA designated it to be. This brings a huge rift between Jocinda and Brian.

Years later Jocinda is still working for NASA while Brian is a deadbeat. Brian's life is turned upside down and he's struggling to get to the next day. While all this is happening there seems to be some sort of disturbance with the moon.

This is when we meet our third protagonist KC. He's a doctor but specializes in conspiracy theories. There's a huge conspiracy that believes the moon is a superstructure created by ancient aliens. After some reconnaissance work at NASA he actually finds evidence to help prove his theory. The problem with being right is that it can spell life or death for everyone on earth.

KC makes it a mission to tell everyone around the world and notify NASA before it's too late. The earth is in trouble and we need these three heroes to save us all.

This movie feels like it has a lot of influences ripped from all of our favorite disaster movies. I can see Independence day, Armageddon, 2012 and many more. If you haven't seen those other movies a lot of this stuff will feel fresh to you but if you have this movie will feel like a bit of a rip off. There are so many of those other elements that it can be a little distracting.

Story wise it is very inconsistent. There are rules that this movie makes for the world they live in but they don't even follow these rules at times. You really have to shut off your brain to have some fun with this one. There are a few messages that this movie tries to convey to it's audience. Most of the messages have something to do with how the media conveys messages to the masses to ease chaos. There's also a bit about social classes. It's really all over the place at certain points, never committing to a specific topic.

You have to hand it to them that they did have some imagination when coming up with this whole concept. The whole twist at the end and the culmination to that point had a lot of potential. The only thing was the uneven storytelling to get to that point.

Overall, there is still some fun to be had with this movie. The actors are charismatic enough to keep us interested in what's going on. Unfortunately what's going on is very uneven even though they took a lot of it from previous movies. I have to give this movie a 5.5 out of 10. You can have some fun with it but you really have to just go with whatever's going on and not think too much.
