LEGO Star Wars is essentially a franchise on its own. Starting off just as fun toys to play with, it branched out into video games and animated content over the decades. Sometimes we have gotten shorts, and sometimes we have gotten ongoing series. We have even gotten a holiday special, and we are about to get another one of those very soon, though it will be a bit different from the one that came out last year.

The upcoming special is titled LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales. Set for release on October 1 via Disney+, this will be a Halloween special. The premise reads,

"The special from Lucasfilm and the LEGO group follows Darth Vader’s loyal servant Vaneé, played by Tony Hale, as he tells three frightening Sith stories: 'The Lost Boy,' the story of how a young Ben Solo first meets Ren; 'The Dueling Monstrosities,' which imagines how Darth Maul and General Grievous were reborn; and 'The Wookiee’s Paw,' which gives a look at what might have been if all of Luke Skywalker’s greatest wishes were immediately granted."

Based on the trailer, this idea sounds very similar to the Tales from Vader's Castle comics that have been published by IDW. In these stories, characters end up on Mustafar and end up hearing scary stories from earlier in the timeline. In this instance, it will be the Lego versions of Poe Dameron and BB-8 hearing stories from Vaneé, Vader's servant who was first introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His voice actor, Tony Hale, may be familiar to those who have watched Arrested Development. No doubt that there will be comedic moments for this character amidst the telling of the terrifying tales.

It sounds like this special is really pulling from a tad more obscure Star Wars lore. "The Lost Boy," for example, will feature Ben Solo's meeting with Ren, which was covered in The Rise of Kylo Ren comic miniseries by Charles Soule. Ren is essentially the leader of the Knights of Ren before being defeated by Ben, and he refers to his lightsaber as "the Ren." Fans have pointed out how silly this sounds, so it is possible that this special will really lean into the silliness of the idea. Ren is also set to be featured in the upcoming comic miniseries Crimson Reign, so the character is certainly getting much focus these days.

From the trailer, we can see that "The Dueling Monstrosities" at least partially adapts the arc in The Clone Wars in which Maul returns and is given spider legs thanks to Mother Talzin's Nightsister magick. With the premise also mentioning General Grievous being reborn, it is possible we may see a version of how he becomes a cyborg. In Legends, it is due to a shuttle crash orchestrated by the Separatists. In canon, it is implied that he seeks out "improvements." Perhaps the origin told here may be inspired by how Lucasfilm internally perceives his canonical origin.

And of course, in the trailer, we see young Luke Skywalker wishing to become a pilot, and then having the opportunity to join the Imperial flight academy come along. With a title like "The Wookiee's Paw," it is a given that this will be similar to those "monkey paw" stories in which characters make wishes that have negative consequences. There is a question in the trailer of whether any of this actually "happened." With these being tales, they may have some embellishment. LEGO Star Wars continuity has been somewhat fluid anyway. The trailer also shows us Graballa the Hutt, a villain from Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, so there is a bit of continuity with previous stories.

Another thing that stands out is the battle droid who acts out the role of Jack Torrance from The Shining, albeit in a comedic fashion. So perhaps we are in for some homages to classic horror stories. With LEGO Star Wars, it is generally guaranteed that viewers will have a fun time.
