Beyond Rules Reach
Pain is the first thing to hit me, a searing pain in my head. As I begin to regain consciousness I can feel the cold ground beneath me. I try to picture how I got here, but my memory fails. Taking a quick mental check it doesn't seem to be that any of my bones are broken, though there is a strange throbbing pain on my left forearm. I’d almost call this a miracle, but these days no one believes in those anymore. I slowly open my eyes and the night sky becomes more clear.

Aaron Swift sipped his coffee at the bistro that had been installed in his male housing dormitory and watched all the women walk by the windows. All of them were of the same shape and height with only the proscribed hair colour, either blonde or red or black, nothing in between and nothing different. Looking at each one up and down he searched for flaws or differences anything that would make any of them stand out and to his chagrin he could find nothing. All their eyes were the same shape all of their eye colors were brown or hazel only. He wondered if the stories of women with different shapes and sizes and with blue or grey eyes were true. Then he laughed at himself the histories said as much but, in this day, and age the way the Proletariat controlled information that could be a propaganda campaign as well.

Few people noticed when the shortages started. It was a slow process and we were all tired out from the pandemic. Food portions decreased while prices went up. Labor shortages caused domino effects in supplies of fuel and raw materials. Before we knew it our lives were different. Designated days at the grocery store lottery soon gave way to mass panic and looting. Gas pumps began to dry up and communications networks went down one by one.
Michael PaddockPublished 3 years ago in FuturismThe Water Lily Soul
Working in the conservatory that housed the Water Lily Pond was one of the far more desirable jobs on the entire plantation. It was a serene and calming place with the large pads beautifully stretched across the still water of the pool. The dank humidity that clung to the windows muted the sound outside and she found it deeply soothing to open the heavy glass door and feel the warmth inside billow over her. As she would squeeze her body in between the gap she always felt safest as the door weightily closed behind her. It also meant she was mostly left alone these days. Her work was good, and she rarely complained about anything. Her battle-weary Line-Commander was the only one who would ever appear and, even then, with suitable disinterest in anything other than fulfilling his own directives.

Alive
She awoke to the howling wind. She had been on her own for years, but the wind always startled her. It sounded as if it carried all the cries from past civilizations in its breath. Its painful howling was only a reminder that she wasn’t safe. She shuddered remembering the first time she heard the wind. Her world ended that day. Everything she had ever known was gone. She didn’t want to think about it. All she had was now.

There were no sounds. It was not so long ago, this would have been a blessing. 2 months ago, the bark of angry and starving dogs pursued me 3 miles. Whenever I felt I had escaped them by climbing, or through a door which I closed behind me, or some other way not designed for the less intelligent on 4 legs, their desperation found a way around. So I was forced to run.
