It Was A Blast!

Star Wars fans argue about many things. There are few things in the Star Wars universe that are not a controversial topic. However, one thing that fans almost universally agree on is that Ewan McGregor is a fantastic Obi-Wan Kenobi. Some fans even argue that his performance is the best part of the prequel trilogy. Since then, fans have been clamoring to see McGregor return to the iconic role. After years of hoping, speculating, and moving from film to television show, Ewan McGregor will be returning as Obi-Wan, and fans could not be happier to see him don the iconic robes once more. Fans are not the only ones who are excited. McGregor’s co-star Kumail Nanjiani said he had a blast working with him.

Recently, Kumail Nanjiani spoke with Hemispheres about his career as a comedic actor, working with Mike Judge, and his recent role as Kingo in Marvel’s The Eternals. However, they also spoke about his so far unnamed role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and what it was like working with Ewan McGregor. Nanjiani confessed it was an honor and delight to work with McGregor. He said that he had been a fan of McGregor's for some time.

“It was truly a lovefest. I’ve been a fan of Ewan [McGregor’s] for so long. To get to work with him and become friends with him and realize how he’s such a good person? He’s so genuine. I don’t think he knows he’s a movie star. He’s very normal and open. Sometimes you work with actors, and if they’re doing a [intense] scene, they’re obsessed with carrying that energy with them all day. Ewan was not like that You could do an intense scene and then he’s back to normal, joking around and having fun. And then after that, he’s back in this super-intense scene. It made for a very un-stressful shoot.”

While it is always nice to hear that a shoot was not stressful for actors, this is also a testament to both Kumail Nanjiani and Ewan McGregor’s acting ability. For them to be able to slip in and out of character so effortlessly really shows how much they have honed in on their craft, and that would also seem to bode well for the show at large.

Kumail also stated that Deborah Chow was fantastic at directing the series:

“And then Deb [Chow], the director, was absolutely amazing. She could give you a note and somehow have it glued inside your brain. I’ve never had that.”

Chow had previously directed some fantastic episodes of The Mandalorian, and now she is helming all six episodes of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It looks the like show is gearing up to have an impressive pedigree of people working on it. Hayden Christensen is returning to play Darth Vader. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are reprising their roles as Owen and Beru Lars. Then, you have people like Sung Kang and O’shea Jackson Jr. joining. Hopefully, this not only means the cast will be giving excellent performances, but also that it is a show truly worth the time fans have waited.

With all that being said, news on the show has been pretty sparse. Obi-Wan is a fan-favorite character, and this appears to be an important story in the Star Wars universe. The people behind it definitely want to get it right, and it is understandable that Disney and Lucasfilm would want to keep things secret for as long as they can. They have a good track record with Disney+ shows, and their next show The Book of Boba Fett looks just as amazing. Obi-Wan Kenobi has the ability to take the high ground of Disney+, and fans will not have to wait too much longer to see the good general. The show is set to release in 2022, but there is no concrete date yet. However, there is the chance fans will see more on Disney+ Day on November 12.
