Kathleen Kennedy Teases That 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Season 2 Could Be In The Works

“Six. It was always the plan to tell the story in just six episodes.”

This was more or less the answer when George Lucas was asked if he would make any more Star Wars movies after Revenge of The Sith (this was of course before the sale to Disney). At the time of writing this article, it is still more than two months until the premiere of the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries on Disney+, which, coincidentally or not, also consists of six episodes. And even before anyone outside of Lucasfilm has seen more of the upcoming show than the recently released trailer, fans have started to ask: will there be more?

The answer, that series director Deborah Chow gives to this question is in fact not too different from the one that Lucas has given more than a decade ago:

"It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. The approach has always been that it is one full story."

While this may be true and has never been kept a secret since the time the series was announced, Chow’s quote does not rule out the possibility of a second season, or, more precisely, of another miniseries. And indeed, Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy does admit that there is a chance for fans to get more adventures of the Jedi Master in exile:

"It's certainly something we talk about.”

The key to the decision whether the series will continue beyond its conceived ending by late June when the last of the six episodes will be made available is if there is a story to tell:

"Everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan [McGregor] had an incredible time. Hayden [Christensen] had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we'd have to really answer the question why?"

As Obi-Wan Kenobi is set ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, roughly at the halfway point between Episode III and Episode IV, there would be plenty of time to tell at least one more story. A second miniseries could easily take place one or two years after the first story and still leave enough time for a third or fourth one, if needed.

This leaves the question of the story. The climax of the upcoming series will undoubtedly be the battle between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader (played by Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, respectively). While many fans are still struggling to wrap their heads around the fact, that the confrontation between the Jedi and his former Padawan on the first Death Star was not their first encounter after their fateful duel on Mustafar, it is highly unlikely that the show’s creators would dare to set up another one taking place before the events of A New Hope.

So how could a second season even try to top a duel between Obi-Wan and Vader? The answer is simply that it does not have to. Although the coming miniseries will be self-contained, there surely will be some loose ends after the sixth episode that could be picked up and expanded upon. Even if there is not, the Empire is still hunting down Jedi and oppressing people who might be in need of a Force-sensitive helping hand. Standing against this Empire is a growing rebellion, even if it still consists of only a bunch of small Rebel cells at this point in time. Bail Organa is out there, trying to unify them and he (and his daughter) could need the help of an old friend. The same is true for Ahsoka. Who knows, maybe Kenobi even gets to travel to Dagobah to meet up with his former master.

According to Kennedy, Lucasfilm seems willing to at least consider another adventure of Obi-Wan and Ewan McGregor would probably not hesitate to do it again now that he has so comfortably slipped back into the Jedi robes. It ultimately all depends on how well Obi-Wan Kenobi will be received by the fans and if Lucasfilm will be able to hire a creative mind to come up with another satisfying story for the Jedi Master.
