“Just because you don’t believe in magic doesn’t mean magic doesn’t believe in you.” I stared in wonder at this statement written in a card I found in my mail box. The card also contained a blank check with my name on it so I knew it was meant for me but I had no clue from whom. The envelope had no return address either. I wasn’t even sure it had gone through the post. There was no stamp. I looked up from the card and looked to my left and right down my street but it was weirdly empty. I put the card back in its envelope and went back inside my home.

“Love! Will you come here?” I called to my husband.

“Yes, be right there.” he said as he came down the stairs.

“You will not believe what just happened to us. This card was in our mailbox and look!” I opened the envelope and card and showed him the blank check. He looked at me amazed.

“Who sent this?” He asked.

“I don’t know the card only says ‘Just because you don’t believe in magic doesn’t mean magic doesn’t believe in you.’

We just looked at each other lost for words. Who could have given this to us? It really didn’t matter when we realized how our lives would be changed with this blank check.

“How much do you want to write the check for? I asked my husband.

“One million dollars, I’ve always wanted to cash a check for a million dollars.” He said.

“Ok,” He didn’t have to tell me twice. I walked to the kitchen and pulled out a pen from our junk drawer and filled the check out for a million dollars. As I wrote on the check I began to notice something strange happening. It was like the ink was being absorbed into the paper, becoming fainter and fainter as it fully dried.

“Love, look!” I exclaimed as I watched in disbelief.

“What is going on? He asked as he rounded the corner into the kitchen. I was staring at the check open mouthed in bewilderment.

“What? He asked again. When he looked at the check it was blank again only my name in some unknown script was written on it still.

“I thought you were filling it out?” He said.

“I did,” I said looking at him completely freaked out now. We were then startled by the sound of my phone notifying me of something from the kitchen table. I put the pen down and walked over to see what my notification was needing something to make sense because what I just witnessed with that blank check did not make sense.

I picked up my phone to see it was my bank notifying me of a new transaction. I opened it to see that a million dollars had just popped into my account with the number one thousand one as the only identifier of how the money was deposited. I had to sit down. This day could not get any weirder.

“What happened?” my husband asked. I just passed him the phone so he could see for himself. I had no more words for that moment. My mind was racing with so many questions and thoughts of the new level of financial freedom we somehow just came into. My husband must have put two and two together because he sat down next to me grabbing my knee still staring at the phone. We sat in silence, not knowing what to say or do from the shock of what we just experienced.

However this strange and magical experience wasn’t done with us yet. There was a sharp knock at the door startling us back to the present. We swiftly walked to the front door unsure of what awaited us there. My husband didn’t even bother looking through the peep hole, he just opened the door.

On the other side of the door was a mysterious man dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and gloves.

“Greetings Sir and Madam, I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I am Mr. and Mrs. Black’s humble servant. I was sent to give you a message from their universe pertaining the magical blank check you just received.”

We just looked at him perplexed. Who were these people? We don’t know anyone by the name of Black.

“ I know the name does not ring a bell. The name is an alias. To tell you their real name would cause your mind to break. Nevertheless I am here to tell you that the magical blank check you have received as an aid to support you. There is a mission that the Black’s have required assistance with and they found that your particular partnership in marriage to be of great use to them. This is all I can say for now. I will be back with more details in 3 days. Until then speak of this to no one and do not lose that check.” He reached into his suit coat and produced a little black book. “ This is for you too,” He said handing me the little black book. “This book is made to look ordinary but it is a portal to the universe where the Black’s are. Do not open it yet.” He looked at us very sternly as he said it. “The consequences will be dire for all involved if opened too soon.”

With that he turned on his heel and walked away down the street until we couldn’t see him anymore.

Flabbergasted we just stood there, me holding what we now know to be a portal to another universe in the form of a little black book.

“So what now? I said looking to my husband. “Can today get any more mysterious?” I asked hypothetically as we finally turned to go in the house. I thought to myself maybe I should believe in magic…
